Over here in the UK and throughout Europe, this is indeed the traditional demeanour as passed down through the centuries.I've done some wood carvings. Are these wood spirits always supposed to look like they have been sucking on lemons? I think of the forests and fields as happy places.
Pre history would be my guess, tales of the greenman, woodwose, and woodspirits etc were originally told around the camp fire, and apparently still are by some indigenous tribes of the world.A short search gave very few smiling ones, true. Out of curiosity any idea how old the tradition of carved wood spirits is?
