I bought a couple of carving gouges a while ago and decided to give them a try- must say they were a joy to use straight from the box. This is my first go at a bowl and is Spalted Burr Birch. I decided to leave it "chunky" as I had reached a point where I liked the burring on both sides and didn't want to carve through it.

while I was on a roll I carved this ladle from Walnut (design shamelessly copied from Rob and Nic Wood's website). Carving wet Walnut was a delight, just like carving chilled chocolate.

and for anyone who is interested this is the kit that I use for 90% of the time when spoon carving. The other 10% is when I use an identical, but lefty, spoon knife for deep hollowing.

hello Gangsty, the gouge reference numbers are shown in the photo- they are made by Pfeil and are the ones recommended by Woodsmithstore for the job. Thanks for kind comments everyone, that nice Birch would be really hard to spoil, I've got loads more too so I hope I can do it justice.
Thanks again John

Hi, I get most of my wood from Local council. The tree team dump large logs (dangerous trees, windfalls etc) in an area where they are eventually chipped; but in the meantime they don't mind if folk take some. I think this piece was fairly green. There's some tips on home spalting contained within this thread on another forum. In my experience it's very hit and miss and some timbers spalt much more readily than others
