I never thoughtI'd get to go anywhere like this especially while the kids were so young. I was resigned to mediterranean resorts and the odd trip to Florida. But then when I suggested this to my wife, who likes camping, but is not nearly as outdoorsy or into nature as I am, she seemed quite keen on it. My mum and dad came too which was another first. So after much planning and stressing over taking three young kids to the northern wilderness we set off...

Flew into Oslo as it was closer and picked up our hire cars. For driving across Scandinavia only a Volvo will do

This was our cabin, yards from the lake and very comfortable. Mum and Dad had a smaller cabin next door.

We had our own wood fired sauna outside in between the two cabins. It was nice of an evening to relax in here.

Barbecue was a firm favourite for the week.

Truly beautiful surroundings.

We had our own motor boat that was included with the accommodation. It was great fun exploring the lake and fishing.

We found a couple of beaver lodges around the lake.

We also hired a canoe for a day. Paddling in Sweden, the stuff dreams are made of.

There was lots of fungi about.

There was a shelter near the cabins, the kids called it the den. We’d go down there sometimes of an evening and sit round the fire.

Owen built this fire himself and lit it using birch bark for tinder.

These cranes walked right across the road in front of us. There was confusion for a moment as I wondered if someone was missing some emus!

We all had success with the fishing, these were my kids’ first fish. Good memories for them!

And I was rather pleased with this fat perch, it was delicious!

Got myself a nice handmadeknife as a souvenir. I also picked up a large reindeer skin from Oslo airport for an absolute bargain.

It was a fantastic holiday and a wonderful experience for everyone. We only booked a week as we unsure what it would be like. As soon as we arrived we wished we’d gone for a fortnight and we plan to return one day.

Good stuff Sean, I'm glad it went well for you, it's always a bit dodgy taking the family into the unknown.

Did you get much bother from the mossies and black flies, that's the only thing which puts our lass off.

The bugs were no trouble at all. My missus reacts badly to mossie bites and she wasn't affected as much as other places she's been. There were a few at dusk (no worse than than here in the UK) but we'd just light a fire and they'd soon disappear. They might be more of a problem earlier in the summer because when we went the evenings were quite cool and this may have started to kill them off.

Looks very good indeed!

No mosquitos or midges?? What part of Sweden have you been to?
Around here everyone is telling about how extremely much there were and how agressive they were.

It was Varmland, the lake was Stor-Treen at Fredros.

I don't recall seeing any midges at all, just mosquitoes. Only noticed them at dusk but once we put some smoke in the air and sprayed a bit of repellant on they were gone. I used wilmas Nordic summer balm myself and that worked really well but the bugs weren't an issue at all.

Great pix. Glad you had a good time and built memories with the kids that neither you nor they will ever forget.

Looks like an idyllic family trip. :You_Rock_Quite like the looks on those Volvo's. Especially those XC 70 jobbies.
