For those who might like try diy at home ...

Captain Scotts Biscuits
Captain Scott had biscuits specially made by Huntley & Palmers for the Expedition to the following formula:

Flour 80lb
Rice gluten 13 3/4lb
Wheat meal 20lb
Sugar 7 1/2lb
Lard 2 1/2lb
Salt 10oz
Sodium bicarbonate 2 1/2 oz
Water 40lb

The biscuits were baked to a final water content of 5% and each biscuit weighed 2oz.

Interesting (and pricey )..

I've been looking for high calorie snack bars for winter hiking but all the supermarkets seem to have is the low fat/low sugar/healthy option stuff :(

Not cheap but relative to what you can afford/prepared to pay I guess. I remember four or five years ago kitkat bars beat all the 'hi tech' energy bars in some test or other. Hob nobs should be good especially if you smear with butter and jam or cheese before eating :)
