Over the last few years i've gone through 6 cheap ones . Tecos . Argos etc I'm looking for something I don't have to hold onto the antenna to get decent reception

Looks funky but solar instead of wind up as a back up? in the UK? Not good. That said Eton make some of the better budget radios, even the little mini 300(?) has a good radio in it.
I'd recommend a Freeplay Ranger. We've had ours for about 10 years, including 4 years daily use on a building site. It's mains rechargeable, wind up and has a solar panel too. Very rugged and excellent reception
