Looks to be a lot of work for a temporary shelter that is also nearly as expensive as would have been one made from a synthetic canvas. Then, sailmakers double sided seaming tape..which is made to be sewn through, would have been a much better choice to stick the nylon tape on with, and without the odour, or waiting to dry problems.

I'm not sure about the price comparison. Tyvek is dirt cheap in the US, and can often be found on building sites there as it is used to protect the wood framing during construction. Similarly the use of nylon tape rather than the considerably more expensive sailmakers tape.
Having said all that, it seems that you can buy a tipi made out of tarp material for around $150 anyway from wyominglostandfound.com look under tarp tipi.
