Hope I'm posting in the right place, I recently decided to undertake a project to design and make an underquilt for my hammock as it was starting to get a little cold and thought I'd share the results.
What I ended up making seems a pretty good bit of kit to me considering I have never really sewn before and considering the magnitude of the job. So here's a list of features and I'll follow up with pics.
Gold/black ripstop outer shell with reflective side facing in for fir resistance.
2 inch noseeum baffles throughout, nine lengthways and two horizontal to resist movement.
1.1oz, (I think) ripstop inner.
800fp down, a little under 1kg!
As you can hopefully see, this is a bit of a beast. It is full size to the hammock and poppers on to the edges, leaving a 55mm baffle that covers the poppers. It is held in position by 10 webbing straps with buckles on that are inserted through loops around the UQ. This allows for infinate adjustment and allows for a good seal at the ends. This thing can be fully closed up around you with the baffles pressing together.
what I like about it is that since its full size you can go on any angle without being restricted.
The outer fabric is offset to allow the edge baffles to be made out of one sheet of fabric. It can also be used as a sleeping bag by folding the end in its self and tightening with the webbing.
the other thing that worked out brilliantly is that it has integrated compression straps!
I'm not sure on the weight, should be around 2kg ish which is a touch on the heavy side but is not silly heavy for what it gives. All things considered it packs down pretty small.
I haven't had the time to give it a thorough test yet but I'll be trimming the straps down when I do as I'll have a clearer idea of what I find to be a comfortable length.
