As some of you may have seen on this thread

I was looking for a small firesteel for a keyring or similar carry. Neill116 kindly sold me this one, and a blank

I had seen a thread where someone had braided a firesteel into the core as a kind of emergency option but I wondered if this could be developed into a handle and the answer is yes it can.

I braided the firesteel into a circular braid and by ensuring the braid is done tightly the firesteel is held very securely.

Best of all you do not need any glue. The friction is more than enough to hold the firesteel. I would struggle to pull it out. As you can see in this picture I melt the ends of the cord to finish off the braid and also use a tiny dab of superglue on the cord just to make sure the ends do not full out of the braid.

Of course if it works with a mini firesteel it will also work with a full size one ;)

The braids could be done in leather thonging. My original plan was to braid them in some reflective cord I have so they would stand out but I quite like the purple cord.
