Cool Tree!

I was out geo caching with Barbara yesterday and we found this cool twisted Longleaf Pine. The trunk grew into a complete loop.

Didn't native Americans bend saplings this way, as way markers? I'm sure I've read of this.

I've read that as well and was wondering if that might be case here. I'm not sure this tree is old enough for that though as this size indicates only a few decades.
