I'm not sure to be honest, I'm googling caterpillar images - I don't think it's the brown
tail moth one (lack of those yellow tufts in yours): http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/southern_counties/4759905.stm

Perhaps a weird version of the white marked tussock moth caterpillar:

Since moths are my 'thing' I would have to agree with The Vapourer

I wouldnt pick the hairy ones up. They can irritate the skin i think!
