Carving an axe

So I am in the countryside and found this very interesting axe with a broken handle so I made a new handle from a dry acacia , I used only a hatchet and a mora hd now I'm on a food brake and I'll finish it so my question is I there ain't no linseed oil and good stuff like that here in the village , what oil can I use to finish the handle ? Here are a few pics , it's a badass splitter

Looks a fine splitting axe, what is it's weight? Olive oil should do for the haft.

Use the spine of your knife to scrape the haft smooth, you don't want splinters.

It isn't essential to oil a haft. Alternatives include scorching it with fire (rub the scorched wood with something coarse like a dish scouring pad until black ceases to come off).

Only if you like flies.

As mrcharly says, it's not necessary to oil the haft.

I wonder if old engine oil could be used? Messy.
