Just carved this canoe cup, I need to make a hole in the handle but do I go through the knot or next to the knot..........

I would go exactly through the knot, then the grain will surround the hole with concentric lines. Alternatively, thin the sides of the handle to pruduce a "neck" which you can tie a lanyard around without it slipping off. You have done a beautiful job. What is the type of wood?

I have just started carving so looking at other peoples work inspires me to carry on. love the spoon. may try one later.

I don't think you should thin the handle, as it would change a very nice shape. But definately drill out the knot.
