Yeah, I've heard these are pretty prone to dying. The new ones I've got are these:

Going to be doing a motorway commute a few days per week starting next week, so I took the Landy in for a full big service and automatic gearbox oil change, just to make sure it's all ship shape. They found a few issues:
- Rear brake pads need changing. No big deal.
- Front left suspension coil snapped... that's a doozy, but being fixed without it causing any other damage
- Rear, top brake light bulb needs replacing. Previous owner glued it in, so I need the entire new fitting. What an utter thruppence.
Not the worst stuff to find really, but glad to have found it now rather than finding out at 70mph on the M62.

Could do! But to be honest I am happy for them to just get it all done with the rest of the work. They are pretty decent on pricing tbh.
Full, major service (including all fluids and filters such as fuel filter), rear brake pads being done, front spring being replaced and they found an issue with the suspension whilst fixing that which they are also replacing and fixing, rear brake light assembly being replaced, and all the general greasing/checks needed for just over £600.
I have a full service kit at home with all the filters and oils and fluids and that alone is a couple of hundred quid’s worth. So £600 with all that additional stuff is pretty reasonable, and I don’t have to get on my back under the car on wheel ramps in the peeing rain!

To be honest a motorway commute will be much kinder on your vehicle than all the stop start back and forth you’d do round town, think about the amount of cornering, braking, pot holes and speedbumps.
That being said, preventative maintenance goes a long way and I think you’re wise to (quoting @Broch ) “have someone take a good look at your vehicle”. The Freelander I purchased back in October is due for an mot next month so this week I’ve got it on the ramps with a fine tooth comb, I will also ask the tester (we know each other quite well now) to give it an extra look and highlight any issues that can be nipped in the bud incase I’ve missed any.

Something went ‘bang’ just before my holiday, I suspect it was the right driver side suspension coil so it’s back in the garage, where it seems most comfortable.
I might see if they’ll just lease me an annual parking space.
