i got stung on the scalp last week. one of the beehives was a bit hyperactive and ready to swarm. if anyone went evenly slightly close they got chased away by a bunch of guard bees.

yes and yes.

i know some old timer master beekeepers who have had to give up because you get very allergic to bee stings eventually. ( a good source of cheap beekeeping equipment :) ).

When i was about 10 we found a wasp nest in a friends garden the lad i was with poked a stick into it they swarmed out and chased me down the road it was very scary my back and neck was covered with stings. I had to spend time in hospital as a result. since that day i have been stung once by a bee who i lay down on but who could blame him :)

i always get stug when i've not even seen them!

once in my shoe on a scout camp(wasp was in it! )

once whilst talking to Tony at the first ever bushmoot!
(it just was attracted to my arm for some reason, then it stung  )

I'll mention here, as opposed to the honey extraction thread, i was stung once this weekend, just under the left eye. I had just removed my veil, and was standing in the flight path, and one little darlin' sat down for a rest on my cheek. All was well until he started crawling toward my eye. So i gently brushed him away, but the inevitable happened. Chances are he would have flown off, but being so close to my eye I was not willing to take the risk. Not particularly painful, just swollen because of the tender skin under the eye. Piriton and a good nights sleep soon put it right.

Having hairy arms doesn't help, they get tangled up and frustrated, and then sting 'cause they feel under threat. But i cannot work covered up.

Throughout the season I might get stung 5 times...

You must get stung a lot if you have your own hives, does it always hurt as much as the first time or do you get used to it ?

An old beekeeper I used to work with reckoned that you could build up an immunity to the venom, but you never, ever get used to the actual moment of being stung.

I remember going 'bivying' with a mate in some local woods when I was younger and standing on what I thought was a rotten log only to find a swarm of wasps chasing after me.

Immediately I started to peg it along a nearby footpath and throwing off bits of clothing here and there, much to the confusion of several walkers. I was pretty well covered in the little blighters from head to toe but somehow managed to avoid a sting.

Apparantly my skin is quite thick  or something like that :D

I do have two bite/sting marks on the inside of my right wrist at the moment. Guess I must have got them at the weekend, no idea what they are from though. They are almost identical and exactly 1/2" apart.
