Has anyone ever camped or travelled extensively using the old navy standbys, such as hardtack, salt beef and dried peas? In the old camping texts it is clear that there was a constant campaign to find better grub, or new ways of serving up the old standards, but until relatively recently this sort of fare was pretty much all that could be relied upon to last.
I've tried making hardtack a few times and it is better than you might expect, particularly when crumbled into soup, but I have never attempted to live in the past via my stomach for any length of time. Having read about the explosive results of eating Erbswurst for too long (an old German army ration) I would have serious doubts about the comfort to be derived from such a diet.
