Instead of striking with the palm of your hand how about using a club hammer 
Have you tried using it indoors where the air is not damp yet Jason?
I honestly got mine going on the second strike at home.
Can the piston be "double struck" to increase the internal heat of the piston?

What tinder are you using mate?
I have much better luck with chagga than I do with charcloth.
Make sure you have lubed the gasket well to ensure a good seal too

You certainly can use them outside, but Jason and I were playing with them at the moot and everything was quite damp including the air.

I have found that people tend to be a bit tentative. A good wack and careful but quick removal of the tinder.

I had problems with mine a while back, then I put a bit more lube on it and it sealed nicely. I whack the hell out of mine with the palm of my hand, not sure if it is a recognised technique but it works for me!!
Another thought - I've only ever got my piston to work well once it's been warmed (wearing inside clothing, etc.). That, and ensuring that the rod thing is well vaselined to ensure an airtight seal. Personally, I'd stick with a firesteel.
If you've had it a while, it might need to have the gasket replaced. I have better sucess with Horses Hoof fungus than charcloth but still not 100%. There is a definate technique which takes a while to master - I haven't yet!

Here Is what I found to be most helpful. I usually use chaga for the tinder, but it's mostly about getting fresh oxygen after each compression.

I saw that, but I'm new and thought I would add my thoughts just for fun. Have you had better luck with the fire piston since you started this thread?
