Since I am going to London for a mini holiday in a few days I was wondering: Anywhere I can stock up on some of your excellent English flint in or close to the city core?

Norway is great for lots of primitive things, but we lack sources of excellent knapping material.

Thanks for your offers Tengu and Red, maybe that could be an idea. But being quite unexperienced when it comes to navigating in the urban landscape I'm not sure if I'd dare.

I have hundreds of reindeer backstrap sinew in the basement. Excellent for many things. Trading a dozen or two away would not be out of the question. Also, I do (if I may say so my self) make rather good sinew bowstrings. For some seriously good chunks I'd be more than happy to make one for a trade. ;)

Dont worry you will only get shot at close range after youve been pushed to the floor if you look like you might be dodgy :D.

You should see the looks i got when bringing back a samurai sword from Romania, an armed guard was sent to follow me until the baggage was through checkin.

Not to steal the thread but can flint be found around the midlands?

Torus,

I'd really like to work out a way of doing this for you. I've just been out and weighed the flint nodule I brought back for a mate - it weighs about 5 kilos. Not sure if you could take that home on the plane ??

I could look for some smaller pieces that would be fine for arrow heads and spear points if that would be any help to you?

Or I wonder if we could send it to you surface mail...still be expensive I fear though...hmmm there must be a way

Red,

5kgs. Wow, a very kind offer. Though I think I am landing a deal with Tengu. How would you plan on delivering the rocks? If it happens that the transportation costs from Tengu's place will be excessive it would be very nice to have a backup solution though... :naughty:

So what is worth seeing in London? Abo stuff is what primarily is of interest. Is British Museum good?

I live in London and have flint. Victoria Station is just about 25 minutes away by train and then 10-15 minutes walk. Any use?

The horniman museum

has a good antrhopological collection. It's a bit outside but easily doable by train.

The Natural History Museum is a must

Camden Market is always worth a look

You could always look in on Purdeys, Churchills etc for a smile

Theres some very good outdoors shops around Camden Market

The Royal Armouries is worth a look

As for delivery, I may be able to get one of my staff to drop it off at your hotel subject to when you are coming, failing that, I'll post it to the hotel or something. Let me know if it doesn't work out with Tengu or Rich59 - we'll make sure you go home with some flint between us!

As for activities in London I think there are regular acheological hunts at low tide of the river thames and the public can join in . They turn up loads of historic stuff at every session - Roman coins, fossils etc etc.The British Museum does indeed have some good stuff. Whole galleries of artefacts spanning many thousands of years of human activity.
