Act of Valor: Puzzled

Just saw Act of Valor and enjoyed it very much.

Nice to see a film with no romance spoiling the plot and where all the good guys are good guys and not hidden moles, repressed psychos or senior officers with hidden agenda.

Anyway this old man is puzzled by a couple of things.

First, why do they have red dot type sights in the shanty town lighting up the place like a bunch of laser pointers at a teambuilding event? I thought that they had holographic sights where the dot is only visible in the sights not by third parties?

Second, the actors are supposed to be SEALS so why do they lower their M4s, and look at the magazines when changing them?

They probably had laser pens on for dramatic effect the IR laser sight used in the real world doesn't show in anything other than your nvgs, red dot sights and holographic style don't project anything out the the front,
positive reloading is how it should be done not Hollywood speed changes:) a quick look doesn't waste any time,

waiting for the film to come on to sky to see it, was it really good?

Yes it was good. Uncomplicated plot. The SEALs were professional not Rambos or psychos.

One of the few American soldier movies when I did not end up barracking for the bad guys:) No Arnolds or Chuck Norris types. A credit to the American soldier actually

Apart from a few things that film making made necessary (daylight jungle assault) they looked like an elite unit. But frankly the magazines changes were surprising. I am an old iron sights M 16 and M 16A1 man and we never needed to look at the magazines or lower the weapon to change them. Maybe that was actors doing the change not the SEALS and the director liked it

It was fun to see the technology though.

What is "positive reloading"?

Looking at the weapon/magazine (or weapon/speedloader if using a revolver) while reloading (being "positive" you're getting it right) Most training courses don't care either way as long as you're effective. They only get picky in the advanced SWAT type drills for civilian cops; my military experience was never in the advanced, elite units (SEALS, Green Beret, or Marine Recon) so I don't really know how they train beyond the ordinary drills.

Well I'm new school L86A1\Browning HP now A2\ P226:p and I have always looked at the magazine(to ensure its the right way up and the first round is still seated correctly to prevent a first round jam) which results on the rifle\pistol being lower as your head looks down, unless you need to cycle straight to a side but its not for more than a second and if reloading your in cover anyhow.........right:D

Well I suppose the drills have changed though we were told to have the routine down so we need not look nor lower the weapon. And yes we changed mags when not in cover when going through an ambush for instance.

OT - Does anyone remember how to unsling, rotate, load fire and reload a round one handed with the old 303? :)

If you can find an old manual it's in there somewhere.

LOL. Love the idea of a Browning HP being "new school." 80-90 years old and it's still a great weapon.

That would be fun. You should try some of the hangun drills for the SWAT types (now they called SRTs though/ Special Response Teams or CERTs/ Correctional Emergency Response Teams) They drill with one hand (too include both strong side and weak side drills) reloading and firing hanging upside down, lying on your back firing over your head, and from other unnatural firing positions. I never tried out for the special teams but did enjoy doing the drills with them.

um, he checked it every single time upto 2mins 49:confused::)

Yeah he did. He screwed up though; at least by the way I was taught. He was moving the weapon away from the firing position and pulling out the empty mags rather than letting them drop.
