A quick zebra billy bail change,

Hi chaps, I prefer using zebra billy cans, personal choice, I recently misplaced my long time travelling companion 12cm can, so thought i would show how i change the bail arm to a wire this makes hanging easier, means they nest better and reduces the pack size, for this you'll need a means of removing the two rivets that hold the bail arm on, some push bike brake\gear cable, brass tube( I use 6mm from B and Q), some pliers\crimps\mole grips, and snips.

the pots as new, SHINY!!

Remove the two rivets and knock out the core to remove the arms, I used an angle grinder

Then cut your self two 1cm long bits of tube,(I was doing two pots here)

You can see how I have routed the cable, this allows it to lay completely flat against the can when not in use, feed the cable through, then (having already put the brass tube on prior to threading) thread the working end through the tube, crimp and snip off any excess.

This is strong enough to easily support the billy at full capacity

With the wire bails fitted the cans all nest together with the loss of only one plate from the 14 cm can if you stack the 16 cm plate on top,

All nesty, 12cm, 14cm and 16cm.

Very tidy

Not as flush and smooth as yours, and it does get in the way of stacking if the pots are tight, but the inner brass bit from the electic chocolate block thingie works on brake cable too.

Cheers Toddy it really is a grey day isn't it, gonna take the nippers out for a rainy trundle after a snack to see what's out when its wet, we found a bedraggled Robin last time sat in a hazel cop trying to get out of the wind and rain, good tip on the chocolate box connectors, though I have had an incident of one slipping out when over a fire I was not a popular chap just a case of checking they are tight, or bending the wire tail to help prevent slipping through I guess,

Just to be different I actually prefer the std metal bail arm I find it more useful and easier to use and it dosnt take up any real space

I can take the lid on and off easily while hanging as the arms are spread where the wire one pulls in as a triangle means (for me) i have to take the pot off to lift the lid

the metal handle being ridged can be uses to one side as a holding handle if your going to eat from it with out burning your hands on the pot sides (tho i also carry a pot clamp handle as well)


Tho if you want to Nest them you do need to change them like this

I only carry the one 12cm and its full of brew kit etc so I dont nest them I do have a 14cm but thats in a car kit again with stuff in it

Absolutely matey, its all about making things work for yourself, I reckon the fitted bail s are shaped like they are to make it easier to tilt the pot towards tem on one side and pour over it, very cool pots if you like using them

If you twist before you crimp it's even stronger - just in case you wanted to boil up some unobtanium or summut.

Just a thought but if you go to your local fishing tackle shop they have a variety of braided wire together with the correct crimps as its used as leader for tope/ shark fishing

My old trusty, but not s/s, billy was crushed in an accident.

I am reduced to a Zebra pot but I hate the standard bail and want a wire bail with crimps. Do you have a link that shows the pics?
