ahh, i dont think they're ugly, they always look like black ping pong balls on the water. bless em... isnt too long before the pike or gulls take interest

No pike in that pond - not many gulls either - so it'll be the herons and magpies that kill these as normal!

Oh Barney - them coots is moorhens (reminds me of the "yes but those fokkers were meschershmits")

aha, fair enough! The little 'uns I used to watch in the wilds of Cambs were usually pike food I'd have thought jdging by the size of the beasts in the pond. The tip nearby was a magnet for the gulls, plus a large rookery usually meant each year they were all taken. I think thats why I've developed a bit of a soft spot.
