Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

ADVICE FOR THE NEXT BAN: Never surrender an item without a receipt/ticket. I spoke to a beat officer who described the new system at Croydon. Everything is given a case number and all documents are scanned into the system. The way she talked made me feel it was a fairly new IT system. The...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Ended up going out of my way to be most polite. In fact, terribly, terribly polite... and nice. Hope that's enough :-)

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

I'm guessing that too. I could see this being an instigator to law change. So, you can probably all blame me in the future. I must say, the Home Office were very good. Any delay appeared to be from the Police in carrying out HO instructions. In the end, they simply had to.

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

If I haven't moved it to the USA by Christmas, it'll still mean I probably have at least another year to consider. There's usually advance warning on these things. And, if it really is banned next time, and I still have it, it 'will' qualify for compensation.

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

FINAL OUTCOME - THE KNIFE HAS BEEN RETURNED TO ME From the words of that lovely movie The Illusionist, "Restored back to its rightful owner." Sent yet another email this morning to Home Office. They replied within minutes to say, "We have contacted Croydon police today to ensure your item is...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

A week since my last post. Never got a reply from Croydon Police as promised by the Home Office. Emailed HO very early this morning to let them know. Do the Home Office have control over the police? Do the police have to obey their requests? I've no idea. Will update here when/if anything...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Had to laugh at that. Yes, I thought about them letting me walk out the door, then stopping me further down the road for possession in a public place. Hence the stick on beard and wide fedora hat. Still no word from the police.

You are right there. Will keep it all.

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

I'll carefully rehearse my verbal reply. Wonder if they'll be as smug when handing it back. I will of course return all the meaningless printouts they pushed across/under the counter, from behind bulletproof glass. Then tell them why they're wrong, I'm right, and that I shouldn't be the one...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Kept on emailing the Home Office for more than a week. My last (yesterday) was to ask if the complaints URL for the HO was correct. Today I received this short reply: "We have contacted Croydon Police, and they will be contacting you to return your item." Will post here when/if I have it in my...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Subwoofer, would be interesting if what you say is a definite fact. I'm still confused and unsure. Hence my email to the Home Office. Got a response last week saying that they're now communicating with the police regarding the issue. Will reply to your email once I know more.

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Probably, but it'll be interesting to me. Just a few mins every day to annoy them :)

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Once again, anyone tired of reading this now massive thread, just read another. Once a definitive answer/result is obtained, it'll end. For me it's interesting to see how the law works, and what effect it'll have on future variations of the knife ban. The value of the knife is irrelevant. Not so...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Just don't feel comfortable with keeping something that's illegal. Wanted to see how they hide one law behind another. Promoting and advertising a new law, but keeping quiet on the old one. Had no idea that 7 inch with saw back was 'prohibited'. Useful for later down the road. Also, just to help...

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

By the way, I did email the homeoffice.gov.uk address shown, asking for clarification. For everyone in the UK. Will update here when/if they reply.

Neither can I. Forget Watergate. Knifegate!

Voluntarily handing in a large blade to the UK police

Just scanned the two documents, but can't see how I can attach them to any message or forum post. Any idea, let me know. Edit: failing that, I could email them to you. That's if you trust in my not being a crazed psycho :)

Oh no, not at all mate :) I meant 'everyone', as this will probably annoy many. If not now, then further down the line.
