    Just add water.....

Did anyone ever do the beanburger version of sosmix? It could be made with an egg if you were vegetarian or oil if you were vegan and if properly hydrated, which took a while IIRC, was a very good fakeaway for the old Burger King beanburger, which I, as a commited carnivore, miss a lot. It...

    Reeve style fixed blade.

Thanks all. More possibilities there than I'd imagined. I'd really love an original Reeve Aviator, but they're a tad pricey (last offer I had was £1200).

    Reeve style fixed blade.

Is anyone aware of a smith making fixed blades in the style of Chris Reeve's offerings from the late Eighties? That would be a one-piece hollow handle type, preferably with change from a grand?

    Just add water.....

Tinned chicken dehydrates fairly well. Which probably says something nasty about the stuff. But you can make a passable curry with it. Wouldn't swear to the shelf life. Porridge makes a really good alternative to dhal (Indian lentils). Couple of tablespoonsful, chilli flakes and a handful of...

    Anybody used a sun compass?

It's probably still in the garage/attic along with most of the other bits & pieces that were attached to my ex-mil Land Rover when I had it!

    Anybody used a sun compass?

Have one (Military Howard II Pattern). I clearly remember searching for and finding the "tables" for it being one of the first practical things I ever did on the internet, so about '93-ish. And that was as far as it went.

    Time

Lighting up time was still being mentioned on the radio news/weather in my childhood, 1970s. The UK has only had a single, unified time setting since 1880.

    Homemade Jerky

I have to make mine in semi-secrecy, otherwise the Mrs. eats it all. She would never touch it until we got stuck in a wee ville in Brittany one Sunday evening with everything shut. I had crackers, rat pack cheese & a baggie of my teriyaki jerky in my ruck, upon which we dined that evening. Never...

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

Of course it is. But it in terms of getting something done, be it ordering a pizza (facile) or calling an ambulance (serious) it's not an adequate replacement for a phone service. See also speaking to specific individuals. You can negate the shortfall to a degree by having arrangements in...

Oh, they were well ahead of the curve on these. 21 years ahead to be exact! Info is all still online.

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

Indeed, but realistically, what are you going to do with it? As I say on social media regularly, I cover 160m to 70cm, legally, at home. It should keep working in many/most circumstances where I'm still able to operate it all, and on a good day I can speak to a random person half a world away...

Which is where you get into what "community" actually means. I'm tempted towards the belief that it's a lot closer to being a synonym for "tribe" than many in a functional, first world society are comfortable with.

This. But it is very much contrary to credo of many, I'd say most, people who call themselves 'preppers'.

    Shelf stable protein

Maybe I'm a bit less meticulous than others but I'd leave virtually anything, bar perhaps fish, that had been prepped and packaged in lunch bag (or whatever) for a day/length of a shift. I mean sliced bread isn't exactly renown for its longevity, nor ham salad, but you'll find salad sandwiches...

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

There comes a point at which it is difficult to hide and in terms of eating well vice not, it's really not that long before it's evident. I mean, it's not even like you need a total societal collapse... But we're probably getting beyond the sensible scope of any likely "emergency" anyway.

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

I was considering hoarding more from the perspective of, for instance, a situation where rationing exists and to hoard becomes an offence or even simply a social faux-pas than just as a behaviour. My other half will testify to the fact that despite owning two houses and a reasonably sized shed...

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

On being prepared in general, I don't doubt that there are many here who could close the door of their house and not come out for a fair while, to no ill effect. And many who could get by on a long term basis if left to their own devices. The biggest issue, as I see it anyhow, is that you're...

French government expected to issue all citizens with survival manual

My Dad always used to claim it was cheaper to eat out in Hong Kong than to self cater. That would have been mid to late Eighties.
