    Really good budget clothing

I'd buy this if it were a fraction larger. There is tons of this stuff M&F on Etsy...

    Really good budget clothing

The German army parka - remarkably hard wearing item. I wore one to school. It had a removable quilted liner for Winter. Would have liked the fur liner, but you could wear the quilted liner alone, with a bit of elan. I am still sentimentally as well as practically attached to them. I bought...

    Solar Eclipse

I am just worried it is going to break. Can't be good for it all the time.

    What are you currently reading?

Slowly working through Patrick O'Brian's novels. I missed so much of the nuance first time. Also, probably inspired by watching the slightly disappointing Odyssey, re-reading The Oresteia. Light reading, like :)

    Film recommendation

A Matter of Life and Death (1946)- or really anything at all that was directed by Powell and Pressburger. They did A Canterbury Tale, too, 49th Parallel, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp etc. All beezers. Both Blade Runners were good. Any thing with Alastair Simms. The Rules of the Game made...

    My sharps collection.

Nice pile, Herman30 I am gradually parting with various GBs, Plumbs, Skramas, billhooks. I am just keeping the two Roselli axes. Though the GB little hatchet ... I might keep that one too.

Can you help me choose a small multipurpose camp knife?

I rather like the Lion Steel M4. There is an M5 too.

Anyone tried a roof top tent? Thinking of getting one myself!

When I was a kid in the mid 70s we'd often rendezvous on the coast with a family who had a roof tent on top of a Landy. (We had a big family tent and a Cortina estate:)). We were all big on kayaking and surfing, especially on the Welsh Atlantic. So, that's how we ended up friends. Often the six...

Opinel No 5 folder idea ?

Oh, do you mean to keep it open ... no so much to keep it closed? I assumed your friend had just put their hand in their pocket and encountered a partly open Opi #5.

Opinel No 5 folder idea ?

Maybe a silicone or rubber sealing ring ... like you get for torches/plumbing etc. About 12mm Or, stitch together a slip case from chamois or that 1mm-ish leather they use for book binding - you can get that cheap as scrap. I use it all the time for the same job...

The perfect "Two Knife" bushcraft set

I like the Peltonen, Herman30. To the OP's question A flat ground, carbon steel fixed blade of some kind. About a 3 3/4" length blade, 1/8" thick. Wood handle for preference A folding knife with a 3 1/4"-ish blade. Maybe a large (4 1/4") carbon steel stockman. I.e. something that can do...

    Dangerous trees

Yes, that will have killed you dead, I think. :( I saw the same once. I was just standing looking across a patch of woodland; a clear, still and sunny day. Then a huge creaking signalled an equally huge limb just peel itself off a big Maple. No sign of why. It just decided to shed a few pounds.

    Melton ... or similar?

I'd like a lightweight blanket and am thinking of buying a couple of yards of 18oz melton wool. Does anyone know if 18oz is about right for the drape? I know the stuff can be a bit like hardboard if it's too heavy a weight, but I have no clue what would actually be appropriate. Maybe merino...

    What are you growing?

Love 'em. They do tend to produce a patch of sticky syrup under the trees though; very attractive to every flying bug.

    Rule of Three

There's Try, try, try again. Also, don't take the third light from a match. I sometimes wonder how amny of these things are just variations on Christian trinity. (And, if even that is based in something older)

    What are you growing?

Trying Okra this year, but the rabbits gave it a chewing. We'll see how it goes. Lovely cooked in a dry pan with some cumin, salt and dessicated coconut. They always say cook a rabbit with some Okra from the same field you caught it in (OK, they don't really say that)
