    Blade heat treating

Thanks, I will have to take a look as often on there. I have often wanted to do a bit of my own heat treating but not sure if I can justify the cost but I also want to turn a few coil springs into knives, maybe I will get round to it some day and when my tendons in my arm aren't screaming at me...

    Blade heat treating

No probs Broch, I didn't think you were being critical. Have a look at grinding in the hardened state as although it is an initial outlay to get blanks cut and heat treated in bulk it does have its benefits. Even if you don't, look into getting a glass platen as it saves wear and tear on belts...

    Blade heat treating

That's a great price Stew. I might try some of the steels you list and get you to HT them in the future if OK.

    Blade heat treating

Blanks can be safely ground from pre hardened steel and will not be affected if it is done correctly. Yes, if the blade is ground out without the correct process it will of course loose points of hardness due to over heating but it must be remembered that it would only be in the area that over...

    Blade heat treating

Hi Mark What steel are you using, if 01 why not try to do it yourself? Its not difficult and you will learn as you do it. You just need to make a small HT oven, even a few thermolite blocks can be used, a blow lamp, a magnet and some cooking oil. I get my blanks cut now and heat treated in...

Zero Day - Western Cape- Help / Advice

I am not sure if its an ID as such but certainly some sort of proof as to who you are when collecting water, hence my partner would be ok as still has residency there. Postponing the trip is mot an option as one of the reasons we ae going is due to the death of my partners step father so I just...

Zero Day - Western Cape- Help / Advice

Oh that's always the plan over there and as many vineyards as I can visit when I go to Stellenbosch )).... I am sure it will be a great trip as a lovely place, probably one of the most stunning cities in the world with the view of Table Mountain. Thanks Pete

Zero Day - Western Cape- Help / Advice

Yes I have a sceptic tank in my garden here in the UK, I have only had it emptied once in 15 years and it was perfect , just a few solids at the base. Luckily I have a really good 'run off' built into it which functions faultlessly. Good advice about the deodorants, I think we might use cordial...

Zero Day - Western Cape- Help / Advice

Yes I agree totally with the hygiene and have spoken about this in depth as little water and a hot climate is a breeding ground for bacteria, probably more so in a large conurbation. Thanks Pete

Zero Day - Western Cape- Help / Advice

Hi Cheers for the reply and the useful info. The link was sent by my partner as she is from Cape Town and zero day is the term being used by the controlling municipality. There have been restrictions for some time and they are reviewed weekly, measures are in place such as no water to any taps...

Zero Day - Western Cape- Help / Advice

I believe it will be 23 litre .....but that's what is being suggested at the moment. It's not the water as such, there's enough to drink, its the situation of using limited amounts of water to keep clean and healthy. Cleary there wont be the luxury of a plumbed house hold shower every day. What...

Zero Day - Western Cape- Help / Advice

Some of you might already know but the Western Cape of South Africa has a major water crisis at the moment. After months of no rain the water dams are nearing levels where there will be no option but to cut off all water supplies apart from hospitals and emergency services. My partner who is...

    Hello from Dorset

Hi to all, just joined the site from here in a sunny Dorset today. I am not a bushcrafter as my body is too knackered these days but I enjoy the outdoors and everything connected with it. I am also a knife maker and a few years ago got into stabilising all my own materials for handles. I will...
