    what fabric

    For four season use - I'd definitely go for ventile with a poncho for heavy or persistent rain. I wear mine over a T shirt as a windbreaker in summer and over wool layers in winter. It's quiet comfy and soon becomes a trusty friend. I recommend a Snowsled smock rather than a Westwinds one...

    Hi directdrive - newbie here! Just caught you're post - If you can find a smock in a similar material to Filson's shelter cloth (ie very tight woven cotton/canvas) wash and treat it when necessary with the likes of Nikwax/Grangers or Stormproof that will do the job. How about LL Bean?
