Frozen boots after sleeping outdoors during a cold night

Greg, using talc to get rid of the moister sounds a great idea!!! I think I would also use it in my socks before I start the hiking, so I can shake them at the end to get rid some of the moisture away. :)

Frozen boots after sleeping outdoors during a cold night

WOW!!! You are all awesome here and have great tips I could never come up with!!! Combining most of your tips, I summarize what I believe it would fit best for me: 1. Wearing snow gaiters (so that in my boots, I will need to fight the wetness coming only from my sweat and not also from snow...

Frozen boots after sleeping outdoors during a cold night

Hi all, recently I went camping and slept in my hammock during a very cold night (below -20C, yeap, it is still cold up here in Finland). Before I slept, I took off my boots, which were wet (both outside and inside) because of snow and my sweat. In the morning, the boots were "frozen". It...

    Winter sleeping bag alternatives

Hi all, just to give you some feedback following my recent experience in real conditions with my new North Face Blue Kazoo bag. Finally, I got to try it in the woods when the temperature dropped down to -10C (up here where I live, we already had the first snow). So, I slept in my DD...

    Winter sleeping bag alternatives

Sorry for the metric mix Imagedude. When it comes to height, I am used to cm, but I see in this forum that in UK they use feet/inches; this is why I posted my height in this metric. Otherwise I would give 186cm.

    Winter sleeping bag alternatives

Hi all, hi Northern Light. Sorry for not posting already my experience with it, but I only tried the North Face Blue Kazoo (long version) outdoors just yesterday. So, this is my experience: A. the bag is very lofty, fluffy, soft (silky texture inside and outside) and comfortable (size wise). It...

    Winter sleeping bag alternatives

merc350, yes I have read in other threads that all Alpkit Pipedream bags are great value for manoey. Only it is too narrow for my size (I have a chest perimeter of ~115cm).

Using a bivi in a hammock

martsim73, my main concern is the fog, because having my waterproof Travel DD hammock very close to the tarp when raining is doing the job even in heavy rain. But I totally agree with you, rain and wind should be respected and never underestimated. Teepee, I know very well what you mean...

Using a bivi in a hammock

I just read the thread you posted Shewie. Ouh...it seems I underestimate the fog and its sleeping bag penetration abilities!

Using a bivi in a hammock

Thanks for the informative reply Shewie. I never really had any issue with moisture in my sleeping bag with my hammock/tarp set. And I have slept overnight in very heavy rain; but never in deep fog, so that is why I was wandering. he idea for the simple nylon cover sounds really good in many...

Using a bivi in a hammock

Haha!!! Yes I get it, The Big Lebowski! Its sounds so fun (to watch or even better to do so!!). Have you been using your bivi in the hammock to just add a bit of warmth or to fight moisture?

Using a bivi in a hammock

Thank you Shewie! I just visited the hammockforums and searched for weathershields but did not find anything. What are these weathershields? (sorry for my ignorance)

Using a bivi in a hammock

Thank you all. One question through. What if there is thick fog and very wet weather. Isn't the moisture gets on (and ultimately in) the sleeping bag?

Using a bivi in a hammock

Hi all! 1. Does anyone have experience in using a bivi to shield a down sleeping bag from moisture while sleeping in a hammock and under a tarp? Is the bivi really necessary with such a setting? 2. Does anyone have similar experience but using specifically the Alpkit Hunka bivi? I am...

    Winter sleeping bag alternatives

Yes Greek1983, I am still searching. I am not in a hurry as it will not be as cold before the end of October to need the -10 bag. So I am taking my time having also my eyes open for offers. I will also visit some physical shops to see "live" some candidates! I am enjoying the process very much...

    Winter sleeping bag alternatives

Yes Silverclaws, this would be indeed creative and most precious than any other bag bought from the market. For me though, this is not an option, as I have neither the required household stuff nor the patience to do it on my own.
