Are smart phones dumbing us down

I used to be very dependent on my phone. At one point, I had three contracts going simultaneously as I couldn't pass up on the deal for the latest and greatest gadgets and even carried all three phones around. But over the last few years, my dependency has decreased drastically. My phone is my...

    Allotment and stuff!!!

Lol. I don't blame them at the moment. Its a little bit chilly and blowy at the moment. Just hoping that the wind and tides are bringing tonnes of seaweed to the shore so I can use it on my beds. :D

    Allotment and stuff!!!

My garlic are always buried, but everybody elses I have seen do the same. What I can't understand about my onions is that even when I submerge only half the set, it grows well - but downwards. How is that? You would think that the least resistance is above, so would grow the easiest possible...

    Allotment and stuff!!!

Probably a stupid question, but how does everybody who posts pictures of their onions have them virtually just sitting on top of the soil???? Mine are always at least half buried, whether grown from sets or seed. And I plant them according to the instructions. This year, I planted sets so that...

    Allotment and stuff!!!

We tried sweet potatoes last year and never got a single tuber from them. We were told it was because of the lower temps up this way, but we aren't so sure as they were grown in large containers inside a poly tunnel where the temp was well over 30 degrees C during the day. We decided not to...

    Allotment and stuff!!!

I read somewhere that you can ripen tomatoes in a drawer if you put a banana in with them as well. I have never tried it though. I have ripened a few on the windowsill in the past but they don't taste the same as ripened on the vine.

The world accelerates into the distance....

Spot on. Another thing that we seem to have forgotten is that things used to be made to last. But we now live in a disposable era where things normally break within a month of the warranty expiring, requiring either a costly repair or replacement where the process is repeated a couple of years...

The world accelerates into the distance....

I had limited access to my local library as a kid. It all depended if I could persuade my old man to take me. But now, I don't even have to leave my home, worry about late return fines and can access anything that takes my fancy on a whim. I have never read a novel in my life and have always...

The world accelerates into the distance....

Ah mousey, but not everybody is happy to become so wrapped up in, or dependent on, technology. If it was to all vanish tomorrow, the only thing that I would miss is the internet. All that free information about anything you could possible wish to know, readily available in your front room...

    Parsnip Seed Available

Don't put muck on root beds. Use it on things like cabbage, and then when you rotate your crops next season, plant your roots where you manured the previous season. That should avoid the forking for the most part.

    Parsnip Seed Available

I am still stuck with weed control and pest control. Got weeds that seem to grow a foot a day and caterpillars which I am sure are like worms - cut them in half and both half's live! I am cutting over 250 of the things every day, which is a massive decline from a month ago, so I think that I am...

    A vision of hell

I have always though of cities as monstrosities. I avoid them like the plague. I too don't understand why the general idea of cramming people so close together is deemed acceptable. We all complained about battery hens, only to encourage pretty much the same thing for humans?
