Thanks for the ID Hedgehog, and the continued advice Rich, its all very much appreciated.. I'll collect some more tomorrow and let that dry more slowly, the one in the picture is actually bound to the beach drill from yesterday to encourage it to dry straighter than it might other-wise...

on further investigation is the 'elder berry' thats common round here, so will go with that for harth and drill.. thanks for the additional infomation.

we have elder (are box elder and the elder berry tree the same ?) assuming so I'll prepare a drill from that..

thanks for your comments (a great encouragement) : in all honesty I'm not sure what wood the drill is, i picked it up while walking near home the other day. The bark stripped off very easily leaving a very smooth surface straight away. Its noth pithy in the middle but seems relatively soft...

this is my first ever attempt at a drill.... I am getting absolutely nothing from it at all. can anyone give me any pointers from the image ? ps. it squeeks a lot!! pps. I have managed after sometime to get the drill too hot to touch but the harth stays cold to touch

Back in 98/99 studying geolgy, we studied the gulfstream for sometime.. The idea that melting fresh water would sink the stream was a major worry then. The science is there.
