Well I did try tools and the lid does come off - if you have at it with one of those grippy jar-opening jobbies and don't mind getting showered with curry powder. It's a friction fit and goes back on again - seems as secure/difficult to open as before.

I'd recommend getting another blade and fitting it to the handle. The method I use is from Valerie Michael's 'The Leatherworking Handbook' - useful book BTW. Sandwich the business end of a new blade point down between two pennies, hold this assembly vertically in a vice, place the old handle on...
