    Sad loss

For anyone who uses kit from Kathmandu Trekking, or has ever had dealings with Julian, will be deeply saddenned to hear that he is no longer with us. I have just been told by Wendy, that he suffered a heart attack on Saturday and did not recover. I do not know what else to say, other than...

    home made wool smock.

I think Toddy had some useful information and recommendations on another thread recently. Might be worth a search, or perhaps a polite PM?

    KMnO4 Toxcitity

Thanks for the info Dave especially the interpretation. So, to be symplistic about this, iodine is far more reactive and more toxic than the purple stuff. I still like to carry the purple stuff. Adding a bit more common sense, who takes a bottle of neet iodine to go camping? :rolmao...

    West Winds Ventile Antarctic Smock

Recently treated myself to some West Winds Ventile, though only the single layer, not the double layer as in the Antarctic Smock. Of course attraction of any new kit to barbed wire is directly proportional to cost! Got caught first time out. Good news is I can confirm it is easy to repair...

    KMnO4 Toxcitity

In the UK the purple stuff (easier to spell) is sold in 25g pots, so there is an OD opportunity, but you wouldn't use it all at once. If your local pharmacist doesn't have it, he can get it within two days. I'm no expert, but I believe the reason it is so useful for firelighting and...

Brilliant tutorial. Does it matter if the sawdust is hardwood or softwood?

    Why use Celestial Navigation?

When growing up in Wales, I always remember looking into the night sky and knowing exactly what I was looking at.................................Clouds!! :umbrella: Now I spend time under slightly dryer skies, I have more opportunity to appreciate the celestial bodies. As Steve A says, it's...

    Beards....

If you spend any time on a motorbike, you will realise a beard offers very little thermal protection......until you shave it off  !!!! As for hygiene, there are two options 1) trim your tache or 2) wax it. Either way, icecream cones and cream cakes are a no-no :?: I find that...

    Air Rifle shooting permission

If you get the oportunity, find out what the owner considers vermin. Rough shooters might be paying him for the privelige to shoot rabbits and pigeons, but not squirrels (grey only), or rats, crows and magpies. Lots of farmers don't trust airguns, though many don't know why. Don't take it...

Within the spirit of the law

Long time since I was at school, but when I was, the woodwork shop and kitchens had lots of tools which would fall foul of the current laws. Talk to the cops and the school authorities and you should be fine (as long as your current knife isn't a Rambo special  )

    which shelter??

After many nights under a poncho, the extra room of a tarp was such luxury  My dog prefers a tent: If we're sleeping in the open, she always tries to get back to the van!! :Crazy_071

    Too lazy to make charcloth?

IMHO going straight to friction fire can be very demoralising for someone just learning, so charcloth can be a great way to keep their entheusiasm, while they learn to transfer an ember to a tinder bundle. The fact it is so easy to make (especially with the copper pipe mentioned in another...

    An Alternative Charcloth Tutorial

I only had 10mm pipe to hand, but gave it a go. Can't fit much in, but it worked a treat and made plenty of charcloth for 3 or 4 fires. Same piece of pipe is already part of my kit. :o):

    Blanket + Time = Bushshirt?

I'd just like to re-itterate Hootchi's sentiments. I've not long been on this forem and still a bit uncertain 'bout how thing work, but I can't get over what a great bunch of people are in this community. You guys rock :super: :super: :super:

    Blanket + Time = Bushshirt?

Hootchi, this sounds like a cracking idea and I'm tempted to have a go myself. Anyone know where we could find suitable patterns?

Knivsmed stromeng 9" from Attleborough ??

I've not played with this exact blade, but I have used one of their smaller laminated blades. Although it is designed as a hidden tang, it is long enough to use as a through tang. I cut a thread on mine and screwed on a brass pomel.

    Khukuri's

Hi Geoffrey, A friend of mine was at the khukuri house only a month ago, so if you want to talk to someone with first hand experience, drop me a PM for his e-mail and phone number. Bottom line, they are the real deal. No mysterious or fancy metals, they use leaf springs from old army...

how many of us are first aid trained?

I was at a talk given by a conultant anaethstatist on resuscitation. From the talk, it really became clear that there is no absolute correct ratio, it varies with a multitude of considerations. That said, in a first aid situation, the most important thing is to do something, so remember a set...

    Shemag

Always keep one with me in the woods. If wearing it aound your head or neck, fold in a triangle and point corner to one side, not to your back. Not a rule, but I find it more useful. Sling over your shoulder as a forraging bag, can be useful poacher's pocket, tie to a stick Dick Whittington...

Should kit be subdued or bright?

I think, Jakunen, you summed up the arguements pretty well. Personal preference is subdued with a hi-vis vest in the pack. Weighs next to nothing, cost couple of quid from the market and dissapears into any nook in your bag. I wear one over the rucksack when walking along roads, 'coz...
