One of the guys I work with on my MRT told me a story about getting reprimanded for wearing a baselayer under his Buffalo when they first came out in the 80s. The chap turned out to be Hamish Hamillton who started Buffalo. I’ve had mixed success with the concept and never quite took to it for...
The Rab Alpha packs smaller than the Buffalo / Montane but is more bulky than a Polartec 200 pullover (this is what I used to wear under a hard shell). I’m happy with that though as the difference isn’t massive compared to a pile smock. You still might find the Hydrogen a bit warm if you are...
Not used the above but have the Alpha Direct by Rab which looks like it has the same fleece inner / pertex outer. The Alpha Direct is very good working as a mid layer and outer shell. I used it all last winter for climbing, it worked well under Goretex hard shell (when not moving that fast) then...
The military issued quite a bit of really good quality civilian outdoor kit for Adventurous Training. Although it gets a hard life I think there are a few companies that have the surplus contract (try Aberventure and Wilderness Lesuire Ltd). Not all of it will be great for the woods but it might...
I really like it. It’s very much aimed at Bushcraft in Scandinavia, that said there is plenty of crossover and techniques that are useful here too. If you want to learn Bushcraft for the UK then Ray’s earlier books are better. As always you can’t fault the quality of his work and photography.
I...
I think you’re approaching the problem the wrong way. We have really variable temperature and humidity in the UK so I think it’s difficult to get one pair for every time of year. I mostly wear surplus combat trousers because they are cheap and hard wearing. The British issue MTP trousers are...
I think you misread the post, the OP was talking about The Bushcraft Company rather than a Bushcraft Company generically. The Bushcraft Company are actively recruiting now. To answer the OP, I would just apply and see how you get on. If you are unsuccessful you can always ask the interviewer...
Hi folks,
I have for sale my Ray Mears / SWC 30th Anniversary Woodlore knife. Lightly used condition with both sheath styles. Looking for £sold posted. If you would like more information/ photos get in touch via PM. Thanks.
I think the mtn shirt was the original design, it was superseded by the Special 6 based on feedback of folk getting cold midrifts! The Active is Buffalo’s version of the Rab Vapourise. Use - well the mtn shirt and Spec 6 are the same, the shorter version might be better for water sports perhaps...
Interesting. From the adverts it suggests that some were and some weren’t Ventile. I used to own a Cadet Smock and think they were all Cotton duck. I’ve seen quite a few different versions including the orange MRT / SAR version. Good luck with the sale.
I’m a fan of traditional smocks (not with a full zip). I think the design first became popular in WW2 with early SF units like the LRDG and SAS. Later the same smocks were issued to mountain troops also. The smock remained popular with SF units and I guess some were tailored with zips until the...
I can’t help there Greg as a friend sent them over. Can’t imagine it being too much though. I’ve not worn them extensively yet as they are quite thick and it has been too warm but my pal lives in them.
I got these forest trousers from Sweden they only cost about £60. Really pleased with them : https://itaboutdoor.se/arbetsklader/t-p-byxa-forest-hardwear.html
I grew up in the midlands and couldn’t wait to leave as a teen. When I joined up my first posting was to the north of Scotland and since then I’ve always got jobs that are in nice scenic areas. I’m not being disrespectful to those that live there but for me it would probably be one of the last...
