    Show us your working knife

Do you mean that the second picture was literally your knife, or that it was just one like your knife? It looks like the knife in the second picture has a longer blade, which would be quite a…um…development, if it became the knife in the first picture.

    Verifying browser and redirecting?

Every time I have visited the forum for the last few days, I have had a white screen and a loading whirl, saying it’s verifying my browser and will redirect me. Happens at home regardless of browser of machine used, and on work PC in the office. Doesn’t happen on any other web site. Never seen...

Sick after drinking filtered river water

15 minutes is ridiculously long. Hell, I steam cook broccoli from cold water in 15 minutes. Most sources suggest 1 min up to 2000m and 3 minutes above that.

Garden Herbs - not for cooking

Mint, lemon balm and oregano….cut off the seeds and control by digging up the plants or they can take over the garden. Especially oregano. My mum has let it run rampant because the bees like it, but it’s taken over to the point it’s a hazard, flopping over pathways and streps.

Sick after drinking filtered river water

Let’s try to keep stories of illness to those related to drinking water. Otherwise the thread is in danger of becoming a medical version of the Monty Python Yorkshireman sketch!

The End of an Era : The day Long Wave died.

Aye, my mum is grieving for it. She has always complained that FM has an SSssssss sound which she doesn't like. I was vaguely hopeful that DAB would be good, but then they changed to DAB+, so most of the digital channels that come up on my nice, expensive, 14yo stereo are no longer active. I...

    Coping with the heat.

It might be interesting for folk to read this: https://biologyinsights.com/how-much-water-can-you-absorb-per-hour/ Yeah, I visited Canyonlands and Arches in Sept 2016. Walked a ways in Arches, but only got to wander around the plateau where the visitors are at Canyonlands. Spectacular...

Sick after drinking filtered river water

First mistake...shopping on Amazon. LifeSystems own website, 30 tablets, 30 litres worth, under £11 I have used both drops from AquaMira and Lifesystems and like the AquaMira much better. Harder to get in the UK though.

    Forthcoming pebble launching device ban?

There…fixed the title. There are plenty of other pages calling for it discussing local ban or similar. Sigh.

    Sharpening steels

The butcher/kitchen steels that I have encountered, including those that have been around for 70+ years, all have grooves along the length, which makes them bite on the blade a bit more. The newest (a mere 50+ years old) has the coarsest grooves and definitely removes metal from the relatively...

Sick after drinking filtered river water

I have read good things about the Grayl but not used or done in depth research. I lean on the litigious nature of the US market. They say it removes viruses. If anyone independently proves this inaccurate they can be destroyed in court. I have used the PureHydration Traveller and have been...

They are cheap! Also simple….but, water companies use filters and flocculants to remove particles and turbidity in order for the chlorine to be effective. Water companies also use UV. Which is a solution which is also available to backpackers.

Advice needed. Winter mountain tent under £200?

No worries:bigok: t’was just a thought. I too have got a kick from having new gear. That said, I have had five premium packs second hand and only one had a problem, and was sold on at no loss. Three second hand tents that have all been good, and some other bits of gear. I fear you will...

Advice needed. Winter mountain tent under £200?

Would a second hand Vaude Terraquattro 3P be suitable? I happen to know of one in need of a home that would be within that budget, :rolleyes3:. Practically new condition, cannot have been used more than a couple of times before health problems forced its elderly owner to cease camping. He...

Advice needed. Winter mountain tent under £200?

I know the phrase “buy once, cry once.” But if this is a first tent, then going for a packable 4 season seems like it could be trying to take several steps all at the same time. Maybe too many steps for the budget? Four season tents are not required to camp in winter if more sheltered sites...

Hello from the state of North Carolina!

Hello and welcome. :camping: It’s nice to see someone your age interested in the outdoors, interested in building gear, and interested in forums! All of which interests can seem like harking back to days gone by! ;) I haven’t sewn a full pack, just some dockable pockets, but I am just...
