I used to wear haix boots which are excellent if a little heavy.

Seriously though, getting out of a gathered end hammock is much less perilous than stretcher bar? hammock.
Throw your legs over the edge whilst your backside is still relatively central to the hammock.
Why a swiss army knife?
Well the majority of them comply with UK carry laws and are seen as more socially acceptable than a leatherman for example.
I do not carry a Swiss army knife when I am at work, preferring a leatherman.

Whilst your 2-3 meter wide nature trail should indeed be kept free of trip hazards, there should be no expectation that any woodland is trip hazards free at all. What are you going to do - go and pick up every fallen branch and strim down every but of bramble?
When I did my efaw+f course we were told that you tighten it until tight, then tighten it until the casualty was screaming.
The trainer was an ex firearms copper who had done it for real, and had it done to him.
Did they actually say it was "too tactical looking"?
Surely if it fits in the template it can go as a carry on?
I had no problems taking a rush 12 as carry on.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem possible to enrol on the foundation course from that guy, just the intermediate course.
