A quick snapshot of Moot 2026 from me

Any chance of a cloud link? I don’t use Tic Tock (or any other social platform.) Sorry.

    What fuel do you use?

Oh come on TeeDee - I think that we are conflating camping and hiking. (Or we are just having a poke :lmao:) I do not call using my car hiking. Camping is what I do when I get there on foot (long ago), by car or by helicopter. What were fifty odd people doing at Rough Close last week? We...

    What fuel do you use?

I’ma car camper so my big Bergen is more of a cupboard than luggage. I have just been using the Kelly Kettle stick stove system at Summer Moot and half expected a ban or limitation. There were neither. It wouldn’t have mattered as my little KK Trekker and Hobo set up can run on a Trangia...

Can you help me choose a small multipurpose camp knife?

(Smiling) The main use that I have for a knife in camp is food preparation. For that I tend to need a long blade. Cutting a lettuce, a loaf, a cabbage, slicing meat, all need something longer. The string, leather, guylines etc only need a little knife but a bigger one will do. Edited to add...

National Risk Register/National Resilience Update - Nothing new to us.

I disagree. We (all of us of all generations) can’t go back to some self determining idyl. Whatever form this putative catastrophe takes, the solution will lie with modern minds working with modern materials to create modern solutions no matter how simple those solutions turn out to be. (For...

National Risk Register/National Resilience Update - Nothing new to us.

It may be true but it’s true of a world that no longer exists. This world belongs to a new generation. As we ancients shuffle along towards the end of the twig we tend to hold onto a wisdom that served us well when the world was ours. Now we have opinions - should we be asked - but the world...

    My sharps collection.

I’ve had my little plastic handled hatchet for nearly thirty years. There isn’t any sign that it might come loose and I wouldn’t expect any such sign for the next thirty. I have two of them. One got lost in long grass for a couple of years; long enough for the stainless steel head to rust...

Opinel No 5 folder idea ?

Don’t mean to sound glib but: buy a #6. And drill a hole for the ring. A pig ugly quick fix is a little Jubilee clip around the booster - with apologies to pigs everywhere. By the way, I am in the process of creating my own tiny locking Opinel style knife from plumbing parts.

The perfect "Two Knife" bushcraft set

I doubt but am not certain. (I might have been being disingenuous by only referring to my supper. I have lettuce, onions and peppers that will need to be sliced at some point over the weekend. I have cheese and butter which will both need to be spread. I could do it with a spork but it’s...

The perfect "Two Knife" bushcraft set

I find myself totally in agreement with @Broch . Most of us don’t need knives most of the time. I shall be at Summer Moot tomorrow. My supper shall require: Secateurs, a vegetable peeler and a spork. I shall be running a leather workshop were I shall issue scissors and forbid knives at the...

    Rule of Three

in an emergency outdoors on a mobile phone I would always use the European standard 112. It reaches exactly the same Exchange as 999 and is the same in every way but it works in so many countries, has language support and works with you’re phone in almost any state.

The perfect "Two Knife" bushcraft set

I’m about to promote a mass rolling of eyes. Like @Broch i do not have any definition of bushcraft other than some sense of independence. I only know that I don’t fit (…. my interpretation of….) the definitions that I’ve seen here. So: (Presuming that we are talking about outdoors.) I would...

    *The* Gift-It-On Thread

It’s an interesting little thing. I’m trying to think how I’d use it. I’m surprised it hasn’t gone too.
