There is a pan on the side with a small hole leading to the barrel. It's covered by a lid called the frizzen. This keeps the powder in, and gives some protection from the elements. When the hammer holding the flint falls, it strikes the face of the frizzen, which flips it open, and allows sparks...

If it's for diving, have you considered the Spyderco H1 series? I use an Atlantic Salt as a dive knife, and it's brilliant. More corrosion resistant too.

I use the small travel contact lens solution bottles. Hold about 90ml, just the job.

It was the early BG knives that had the problem with the handle splitting, in the later knives the problem was fixed. I've got one, and it's been fine. It's not a bad knife once you get past the snobbery about the BG issue. You can, however get far more knife for much less money.

This is going to sound silly, Jute. As I recall, it's a fibre from India, and is soaked in oil when processed. (Used to be whale oil, Dundee was a world centre for Jute production and whaling)

I've had my snugpack under/overquilt down to -10 (with an extra woollen blanket though) and I was fine and toasty.
