    Watering the crops

I understand your reasoning, it's a narrow tightrope tho, support for farmers, but increased prices.how long can that be sustained? A friend of mine has sheep. None are going to the ram this year as the grass situation means feed costs are bleeding them dry having to get feed in to replace the...

    Watering the crops

Get it now..if you can. Prices will get higher as winter and demand grow. Big farmers will take it all if cattle have to be fed due to a bad winter and deep snow conditions, which is perfectly possible due to the el ninio. I always work smart by working a season or so ahead..supermarkets are...

    Watering the crops

Not only small in number, but size aswell. My shallots that I've just harvested this morning, are little bigger that the ones I planted. Onions are tiny, runner beans are fewest I've ever grown on a tipi. French beans havnt been too bad, had a useful amount for everyday meals, but I've only got...

    Wool blankets

I used this type of sleeping bag as a kid at guide camps as we didn't have proper ones. Nice and cosy.

    Watering the crops

Yes, the soil has a problem. Trying to build up my raised beds, I bought some topsoil and stacked it about 3 inches thick. It worked ok in the past, but this year It's just dried out and gone to dust. No worms to be seen. Heavy organic mulching needed for sure, but that will be after...

    Coping with the heat.

Temps going up again this week. Last few days, though rather warm ,we've had a breeze, so it's been bearable. Not sure how long this next one will be, but I pray it's short lived. I'm glad to have my gel cooling mat, not easy to walk around with it though , there are no arm holes! :)

    Watering the crops

My sweetcorn is about 2 feet high and not moving..it's been a disaster this year. I've used net curtains for shading..all i had to hand :( butterflies still managed to get in on my broccoli. I've almost given up. Another 14 apples dropped overnight. I just can't keep up with it all. So I've...

    Wool blankets

Blanket pins or kilt pins as i call them, cheap enough, make a couple of blankets into a neat sleeping bag. Plus the blankets won't fall off you at night I lay two blankets covering the bottom one by half the second one. Fold blanket that iso on top over in half, fold underneath blanket over...

    Watering the crops

Watering has been a nightmare for me this year. The soil just won't take the water, there are no worms to be seen. It's basically just hydrophobic dust. .my water barrels have been empty for the last six weeks, and I've lost some expensive plants. I'm tired of lugging one watering can after...

    Dangerous trees

My little apple tree has been dropping apples like crazy. They are not ripe yet, but I've got half a mop bucket full, and every time I go out into the garden in the mornings there are several more. I won't have any left come picking time at this rate! Autumn is very early this year, trees are...

    Dangerous trees

I remember at the moot in Wales, a few years ago now, a huge branch just dropped off a tree, narrowly missing dave budds dads tent by little more than a whisker! I watched it happen and barely had time to shout a warning. The only thing that came to mind was TIMBER! But it was on the ground...

    What are you watching?

A young Robin in my garden. Better than TV! He likes bacon rinds and has just sat on my foot to eat one. I'm stoked.

National Risk Register/National Resilience Update - Nothing new to us.

Well, on friday I found a pattern for a nightdress and pj's. I also found some nice cotton material both from the charity shop. I shall be sewing my own nightwear(albeit a bit shorter than the patter states) from now on. I'd had a lift into tesco in town the other day. The price and quality of...

Lifesaver water purifier cube. Pricey, but an easy and lightweight addition to my limited water storage. Birthday present to myself. 21 again of course! ;)

    What is this?

I use a steamer from a charity shop. Just unscrewed the little lifter in the middle and there you go. Mine cost a mere pound of the realm. I rest it on bare earth as they do cook the ground under neath, but an old baking tin helps to contain ash and prevent scorching.
