Horse flies: what are they for?

Or rather the the OP resembles a horse! Sorry, no offence intended by some of their descriptions says they prefer horses to humans. They do seem to prefer some people more than others. I've rescued several of the 1" long giant horse flies again this year, I'm quite fond of them and I expect...

Garden Herbs - not for cooking

Sweet woodruff is a nice little creeping plant that's useful dried as a strewing herb or added to potpourri. We also use a lot of mint for mint tea. Hops, if you have the room, can be used in sleep pillows. My best discovery is sage flower wine, it went a bit wrong and turned out as a sparking...

The End of an Era : The day Long Wave died.

I think the BBC doesn't help itself. Having been subject to its bullying tactics when I had no TV, so no need for a licence, I'm not a fan of the licence fee. It's also a bit laughable suggesting people may.struggle if it goes behind a paywall as many people can't access it without splashing out...

    Raised bed options

I'm considering some sort of hybrid deep bed/cold frame and thinking of brick or whitewashed block. With a cover of some sort It would give us a deep, rich bed and some protection to raise crops earlier and save room in the greenhouse. I would agree that brick might be a bit of overkill in a...

    What did you buy today?

How many lamps do you have now? Some would say I've got too many candle lanterns but there's often room for another nice one...

    Raised bed options

Personally, for growing food in I've never liked the idea of treated timber or something you don't know what's been done to it such as pallets. I've just got one raised bed and I used locally milled larch. It's lasted about 10 years untreated but is fairly rotten now. The local mill was ok but...

Sick after drinking filtered river water

They are about £13 delivered in the UK from various shops that sell on Amazon currently, and it warns you the price is currently higher than normal so hardly dodgy pricing. If Josef is real and in the USSR that might have more to do with the £50 price tag but then I doubt many UK shops would...

    Dumb phones

I must look into that as no one's 'offered' us any form of smart meter and it seems to have gone quiet about their installs. Mum's one works ok but, looking at the readings, sometimes you get a days worth of half hourly readings and others you go a day with no readings, so they don't seem to...

    Dumb phones

AFAIK, but worth confirming, 2g phones still work for phone calls and texts. My Mum's O2 phone is 2g only and despite warning texts from 02 it still works and should work for a couple of years according to their shop.

    Forthcoming pebble launching device ban?

I'd not heard.of the latest proposals but a quick look suggests an aim of making new items more efficient. Sounds reasonable but it'll likely mean much more complicated, so expensive, items that from personal experience may not last as long as a basic item.

    Forthcoming pebble launching device ban?

The social media ban seems to me to be a bit of a sledge hammer to break the wrong nut. We may have many forms of id but many aren't accepted, such as a FAC for voter id, or companies want a different id to what you have. My mobile phone wanted an extra id even though it was bought and topped...

    Flint & Steel

I think I was about 8 when I got caught playing with matches. With a good steel, decent bit of flint with a good edge and home made charcloth I've found flint and steel quite easy to catch a spark. I would advice eye protection, just in case.

    Swedish preparedness pamphlet

We almost bought a large petrol one when we bought the house but it wouldn't have been used much so glad we didn't. Now my OH is doing more work from home some form of battery bank seems wise.

    Swedish preparedness pamphlet

I forgot about being cut off by the snow a few years ago. It didn't take much to fall to drift across and block our Devon lane. It then froze and as it's fairly steep the ice stopped any traffic for almost a week IIRC. It didn't affect us as we work from home and didn't need to go out.

    Swedish preparedness pamphlet

I wouldn't say unexpected, I think I expected things a bit worse where we are. The worst power cut was the Dec 24 storm which left us without elec for over 30 hours. We coped well as we cook on our wood burner and have plenty of candles and torches (more now). The main problem was the freezer...

    Eggs,

Not necessarily. When we had hens much of their food was bought in and that had to be grown, moved to be milled, moved to be sold and I had to make regular trips to buy it - so food miles could well be more than a battery farm egg. When we get more hens then along with what they forage around...
