Lords Wood Meet December 09~11 2022

Aaagghh. I can see the thumbnail Steve, looks great and I can see it's 760-odd kBytes, but I can't get the full resolution image. Yes I am logged in. "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later." What's that about? How do you attach an image anyway? When I try to do...

Lords Wood Meet December 09~11 2022

Dammit I just logged in to say that as it's going to be sub-zero I'll be coming down tonight for an overnighter and it's cancelled! Season's greetings to everyone -- I hope all's well, especially with those of you who had to pull out for health reasons. Ged.

    Cleaning a Norgie

You might have luck with the stuff that I use to clean the glass on a wood-burning fire. I think it's basically a strong caustic soda paste. It comes in a plastic bottle so it shouldn't harm your lid. It's amazing what it does for the fire glass.

    I'm after a pot..

Wasn't this about pots? I've had some decent non-stick sets of three nesting pots (one is a frying pan/lid) pretty cheap (like six or seven quid, can't remember) from Aldi or Lidl. You have to watch out for them as they're only on sale now and again. I expect you can get them all year round...

A Quick & Easy Night Navigation Trick using the Stars...The LURD Method

Sorry, I shouldn't be so flippant about something that's so important. I meant that you really need to think about this but in the end it's just geometry. Suppose that you're in England looking at the pole star. The stars 'above' it are moving from right to left. The start 'below' it are...

    SAK blade snapping?

I've broken lots of tools that nobody here would be interested in. I broke a German stainless machete which snapped clean when I battened with it. The blow that broke it was fairly gentle, with a tree branch of green willow about 2" diameter. Practically no bending force on the blade. I was...

    Limited Canned Goods.

As you specifically asked about cans, here's the current stock list for my mountain retreat, just the cans, sorted by number of cans, top six lines. Yes there are six. The corned beef cans do stack well, but they aren't cylindrical so you can leave them out if you want to. :) Baked beans...

    clothing patterns

SWMBO likes Old School tailoring, and she's made waistcoats for both of us for example. She usually modifies whatever she finds quite substantially. She says: She's been able to find little online in the way of sewing patterns, although there's a lot for knitting and crochet. There are a few...

    All-weather Woodland Access

How about a load of surplus branches from the garden maintenance people, or discarded Christmas trees? Just something fibrous to spread the load and bind with the mud. They used it in Tunisia for tanks...

Thank you to Whitby & Co

Hmmmm ... That's good to hear, as a while before Christmas I sent them my Leatherman Micra when a spring in it broke, and I haven't heard anything from them. I'll give them a bell.

    Article: Burning the right wood

Tony, I'd add to the 'Larch' notes that hot embers from larch fly everywhere on the wind and burn holes in groundsheets and stuff like that. Don't ask me how I found that out, but visit Britton Wood sometime. :)

Swap Tatonka mug with a lid

I have one that I'd be happy to swap, I'll let you have a photo if you like. Not sure that I can lay my hands on it this evening but if not it should be the weekend.

Different steels and ease of sharpening

Crikey, you're right! The things you find out after so many years! It seem like Sandvik did at one time supply stainless for springs and other parts, but not for the actual blades. Apologies for the misinformation, time to edit a post...
