The 'I've found a bargain' thread

Am I right in thinking it’s only AA and AAA size, not 18650s or 21700s or other sizes? I have a smart charger that tells you all the charging data, plus it takes practically any battery size, the only difference I can see is, mine won’t boot out a defective cell and you have to put it in the...

    Brewing coffee?

It’s available on Netflix, also on Amazon Prime Video, although you have to pay per episode on there. Wasn’t a fan myself, although my late mother was, we had to make a pilgrimage to the town where it was filmed when we took her to Sicily!:)

    Ozzy Osbourne passes

$200,000,000 for charity! That’s incredible, what a legacy!! I love the way “stardom” never changed him, he always came across as so humble and unassuming! I remember watching his interaction with his local Fire Chief on that At home with the Osbournes, or whatever it was called, I think he...

    Ozzy Osbourne passes

Very sad news, both Ozzy and Lemmy really defied the odds with how long they survived! I think Herman is right about living for the last gig. Both musicians were a big feature of my teenage years and I continued to enjoy their music for the next 40 years or so although I always preferred their...

    Bivy’s

I had a Dutch army hooped bivi in large size, but found it too restricting- I’m 17 stone, 5’ 11”, I would get a bit panicky when I woke up in the night, I ended up getting a Rab Ridge Raider which although expensive, is absolutely marvelous, it has that bit more headroom that makes all the...

    Someone solved the mosquito problem

Survival Russia has a rather interesting solution to the Siberian mosquito problem, I can’t remember exactly, but it was basically offering yourself to them at the beginning of the season, getting bitten to death over one evening (possibly, after that, you go into the sweat lodge for a session)...

    Bushcraft films

Just watched Leave No Trace, an American vet with PTSD living with his daughter in the woods until they get found and social services house them, then the tight bond between them starts to unravel. A few bushcrafty things in, including the girls back pack, an LK35 without a frame. A very...

    What did you buy today?

I think the Zorro is even better, because it’s more solid, the sound is beefier! Not sure about wanting to start smoking again though.

    What did you buy today?

Disappointing. I don’t tend to use mine now, glad I got it heavily discounted. It’s not reliable at lighting and if you keep the flame burning too long, it’s as though the wick can’t wick enough fuel and so it starts to glow and burn down. It’s just not as reliable as the zippo system. I bought...

    What are you currently reading?

I bought this a while ago, a wee bit more useful than my late father’s 1970’s copy of Reader’s Digest Family Law! :) Not cheap, but very well researched!

    Fish skin

I have a little glass whiskey flask that’s covered in sharkskin leather, it’s called Shagreen. It’s actually rawhide, untanned leather. I believe the Japanese used to use it on their sword scabbards and hilts.

    What did you buy today?

The 1988 edition of The Ashley Book of Knots, by Clifford W Ashley, although I’ve not received it yet. Won it for the princely sum of £17.87 with a lucky bid in the last 5 seconds of bidding. A book I’ve had my eye on for a long time. :)

    What did you buy today?

Do you know if, like the standard Farmer, the main blade is thicker than normal? I have the Alox Farmer, which I got specifically because of the sturdier blade, and was tempted by the X but haven’t been able to ascertain whether the blade is thinner to accommodate the scissors?

    What did you buy today?

Hmmm…a bit beyond the 45 year old remnants of my O-level chemistry I’m afraid, although I do remember fragments of fractional distillation. As regards your lamps, there is someone selling the glass shades, but with postage within the UK, they’re nearly £19!

    What did you buy today?

I threw caution to the wind, put some Coleman’s in it, started it outside first and brought it in when all seemed safe. Must say, I’m very impressed- could certainly see me getting another so I can have a pair, one either side of the mantle piece. I have a miner’s type lamp, actually a GPO one...

    What did you buy today?

I see why a cap for the wick is necessary now, it’ll evaporate like nobodies business. I’ll have to rig something up. I got my Colemans off Amazon, not cheap…at all!

    What did you buy today?

I did find that thanks, that’s where I got the white spirits from, the dictionary definition of mineral spirits (mentioned in the text) references white spirit.
