Input on putting together a first kit bag

Give over, a bacon sarny is far more dangerous than nuclear fallout! :lurk:

    Not my most successful weekend....

Sorry to hear about the shoulder John. Everything else is all in a day's work for a bushcrafter though, isn't it? :) You'll have to have a word with Big Si about the 'Ged-o-matic'. :) I think somebody's nicked it now though. :(

    Scam alert.

They probably did that deliberately. They know that you will read it as 'Paypal' even though that's not what it says, but they also know that my mail filters will reject any mail that says anything like "dear paypal" or "paypal customer". What they apparently don't know is that ny mail filters...

    Jacket advice

I think all these high tech jackets are over-rated. My experience is that they're OK for a while and then they leak where they get most flexing - neck, shoulders and elbows. They're great if you wear them under a poncho and don't exert yourself too much but it gets a bit warm if you're doing...

Input on putting together a first kit bag

SWMBO makes lots of drawstring bags, various sizes, mostly from scraps of fabric from 'real' projects. Very handy, I use them for all sorts of things. Anything from ones the size of a phone for, er, my phone, to ones the size of a pillowcase for stowing a sleeping bag uncompressed when not in...

    Hi from S wales

Hello and welcome to BCUK! I think we all prefer fair weather, but it's in short supply at the moment. :( I think I might nip out and do some sausages under a tarp later. The dogs will like that, anyway. :)

    fire plough intro

Not sure exactly but I think you'll need to have a minimum number of posts before you can upload things. I think it's ten but welcome correction on that. Oh - and well done!

Welcome to BCUK. :) Why not pop along to one of the meets?

Input on putting together a first kit bag

Why not just go for it? You'll soon start finding out what you're short of. You'd manage with what you've got already plus almost any LED torch - a head torch is always my first choice, and then a few backups, one of which will always be another head torch. An ex-issue bivvy bag is thirty...

Just sarting out - hammock recommendations??

What's your budget? You can get a hammok for twenty quid or you can spend hundreds. There are loads of hammocks mentioned on this site, and I believe there are whole Websites dedicated to hammocking. Try a few Google searches to start you on your journey - and believe me, it IS a journey. :)...

Diy Jerry Can wood burning stove

It's called a "tin of beans" because it's in a "tin can" which is usually a steel can coated with tin, ot "tinned". You can "tin" things with solder, and they used to do that originally, but people started to get lead poisoning because the solder was something like half lead and half tin and...

Diy Jerry Can wood burning stove

Zinc burns off pretty quickly at a high enough temperature, on galvanized stuff it's only a thin layer. Once it's gone it's gone. You'll see a powdery whiteish zinc oxide coating and usually some yellowish crud looking like sulphur which will all brush off easily. Most cans will be steel...

    Tracking WhatsApp Group?

It's no secret. :) I was quite happy with my Nokia 8210 for about 12 years, but one day the display started playing Space Invaders or something and it became unusable. The dealer couldn't mend it and couldn't replace it, so the new 'phone was just what they had to offer instead. I could have...

    Tracking WhatsApp Group?

Oh, I see. Thanks. Yes, I have a smart phone but I try not to use it if at all possible so that lets me out. When I got it I removed everything from it that it came with that didn't involve either calling people (which I do rarely) or sending text messages (which is the only reason I have it).

Diy Jerry Can wood burning stove

I think the tin cans are really tinned steel. I just meant that they're thin steel, they're not stainless, and they will eventually rust through. If you're going to use this as a semi-permanent fixture in your shed you probably won't want to be messing with it all the time, especially in winter...

Diy Jerry Can wood burning stove

I think the tin cans are probably just about big enough in diameter for that size of stove - I'm thinking it's about three inches? But it needs to be clear all the way through and the neck of the jerry can is an obvious constriction. Probably better if you can keep the flue as straight as...

Basha/ poncho erection system with speed of bungee & lightness of cord

Four posts in four years?! This is going to take a while. :) I can see where you're coming from with a combination of bungee and cord. Most of the time like you I'm in a bivvy bag on the ground under a tarp, and yes paracord tends to sag in the morning. I just live with it. The tarp is...
