    Firesteel recommendation

I might be getting mixed up here, but I think the softer ferrorods are suited to being scraped fast down their entire lengths whereas the harder ones, like the LMF, are better suited to having sparks generated from slower but hard pressure just at the end of the rod?

    Getting wet in Winter

Scotland has a particular brand of wet and cold. Sleet and rain to soak you at lower altitudes and then freezing conditions and wind on the climbs and at higher altitudes. Thinking back to activities I've been involved in, in the mountains, caving, diving, I've found generally that being wet is...

    Shelter for the hills

I kept things fairly simple for food. Breakfast was a Wayfayrer boil in the bag beans and sausage, with a cup of tea. Evening meals were wayfayrer boil in the bag curry or rice chilli, a small steamed pudding followed by an instant hot chocolate. Lunch was a tortilla wrap with tinned tuna...

Liquid fuel stoves? Diesel, Kerosene, car gas?

If you like cremated porridge get the xgk shaker. Mines the old one with the stiff fuel line. I've not used it in years but I don't remember it being good at simmering! I have fond memories of great sheets of flame leaping skyward when plriming it with petrol. I'm tempted to dust it down and...

    LARGE COMFORTABLE BACKPACK RECOMMENDATIONS

Here's another for the mix if you want molle: look at wisport range. They have a comfortable carrying system and are robustly made.

    Shelter for the hills

Well I'm back from a successful two nights in the wilds of the breacon beacons. Thank you to those who advised me on using a tent. A tarp would have worked but the extra level of shelter was certainly welcome. I expected challenging terrain and conditions and it didn't disappoint. It was my...

    Bullaces

If they are a bitter variety, or astringent, try mashing them up into a moist paste and leave them for a day. The compounds responsible for the astringency may come into contact with enzymes that will break them down. It may then taste more palletable.

    After a new canoe

Ah yes I came across Weston canoes in my searching. Not badly priced either, all things considered. But I (we) went for the Prodigy tandem in the end, in part because my better half felt more comfortable paddling something more akin to a kayak than a canoe. In any case we've had it out on some...

Liquid fuel stoves? Diesel, Kerosene, car gas?

I can vouch for the msr stoves, having used both the whisperlite and the shaker, now superceded by the dragonfly (which I haven't used). The shaker was a blow torch really. The whisperlite had more fine control. They're good stoves. However I no longer use them, as a gas stove is simpler and...

    Shelter for the hills

Oddly I couldn't find much info on the starav, relative to the Nevis and Cairngorm. I went for the Nevis in the end as I didn't fancy rattling around in a four person tent. It looks spot on at first sight, I'll report back in a few weeks when I've tested it around the black mountain.

    Shelter for the hills

Tent it is then :) I'm tempted actually to pick up a smaller tent, Vango Nevis 200 or similar, which are fairly cheap.

    Shelter for the hills

I'm planning a solo trip to the breacon beacons (my first time) sometime in November, to include two or three nights wild camping. It's been quite a few years since I've mountain camped, for various reasons, and since then my equipment has changed somewhat. I have the choice between taking the...

    No char flint steel

Thanks Tony. I did give it another go, this time with the fibres more tightly packed down onto the flint. Again, some sparks caught, producing a whisp of smoke for perhaps a second, then it went out. So it seems that it can take a spark, but I've yet to get the spark to spread. Looking through...

Found a handful of mushrooms in the woods today, thought I should list them on here: A) white gills, green yellow tinge to cap, volva at base. Not skirt visible, but I think it's a death cap. Among ash, maple and a bit of pine. cliker test B) I think this is some kind of tricholoma...

    Billy Pots? Good, Bad, other?

Plus one for this. I've been using it for a while and it's spot on. Perfect for family camps, base camp cooking and so on. It's well thought out, the bail works and stays upright, the handles are solid. It feels like a lot of thought had gone into it. Otherwise, I use a titanium pot - I can't...

    What are you preserving?

Shame. I guess it's either not cooled down enough or not wet enough. Usually my local patch of woodland is awash with yellow stainers, but there are only one or two at the moment. I might give it a few weeks before heading back out.

    What are you preserving?

Please let us know what your friend found. Ive been out and about in the area around Thetford and there doesn't seem to be too much about (apart from brown roll rim) compared to other parts of the uk. Punkrockcaveman that is a phenomenal haul of chanterelle, I'm envious!

    No char flint steel

I had a go at this today: I got some fresh nettle stalks, stripped the fibres, dried them (warmed them in the oven at 50c because as always my time windows for these things are limited). I then mashed them up, scraped them on stone and generally mangled them until what I had left was a fluffy...
