    Ex Military Beware

I was coming home from a CCF week in Wales when the Suez crisis kicked off. When our train pulled into a siding for a couple of hours. The rumour mill went into operation and some of us believed that we were being rerouted to Southampton to join a troop ship bound for Egypt. Having missed...

    Thermal Trousers Recommendations?

A colleague complained to me that her soldier husband stole her tights to wear under his uniform when he had to go on cold weather manoeuvres. Unfortunately, Madame takes a very small size so I've never had the chance to try the idea.

    Thermal Trousers Recommendations?

I'm wearing lined Craghoppers at the moment. As my default trousers are normal Craghoppers, the lined version are familiar in terms of pocket layout etc. They are warm enough but not as versatile as regular plus long John's. When they wear out they won't be replaced.

    Tangled Web.

We used to have two ducks. If one found a juicy titbit it would stand on it until the other duck's attention was elsewhere before eating it thus avoiding the obligation to share.

    Tea

On a visit to a building site in 1960, I was given tea made to the following recipe. Take one fairly clean galvanised iron bucket. Fill with water and place on brazier after liberally stoking with wood off cuts. Add one whole packet of loose tea, two tins of sweetened condensed milk and bring...

    Tea

Just read on Wikipedia that teabags were invented in the USA but we're only introduced in England by Tetley in 1953. So my memory is not playing me false. At least on this!

    Tea

Were there tea bags during the war? I don't remember them. To people of my parents ' generation, tea bags were a newfangled idea imported from America where noone knew how to make tea anyway. Tea bags according to the war time generation we're invented to use up the sweepings from the floor of...

    Beginners crafts advice.

Ditto this. My great-uncle was a shell back (a sailor who had been round Cape Horn under sail). He was as tough as nails and maintained that a real man should be able to make and mend his own kit. He knitted his own sweaters while at sea. "No shops in the ocean", he would say. He was also a dab...
