Just to back this up a bit, the official data says that only 62% of SSSIs are in favourable condition or are on their way back to being favourable after being assessed as degraded from their original designation. That can mean that there is a management plan in place to repair them but not...
It's important to clarify that the government hasn't proposed any kind of cull. They've just told the DCC to comply with the current regulations regarding land management. The farmers are saying that they may have to cull the horses to prioritise other types of livestock. Horses are less...
Just to clarify. This isn't to do with any new rewilding laws but rather it's a consequence of decades of mismanagement by the Dartmoor Commons Council and various government bodies. Livestock have been allowed to degrade important wild areas and the lack of management has come back to bite...
I am :) Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis suggests that species diversity peaks when disturbance events are neither too frequent or too rare. In this case the disturbance is mowing.
Having said that, No Mow May is really just an engagement catchphrase to encourage people to do something for...
I was walking in the Forest of Dean last week and there was absolutely no wind but I could hear acorns falling like rain all around me everywhere I walked. The ground is carpeted in them.
It's 250W and gets up to about 75 Celcius I think, which is fine for jerky. I've done a few batches in mine in the past and they turned out well. It's not a sophisticated unit though so you probably have to be a bit cautious with meat.
Just a heads up for a Laser 2000 dehydrator on Ebay. I know these are popular here and mine is running non-stop at the moment dealing with the apple crop. I was tempted to get this one and upgrade to 15 trays but I think that would be pushing it a bit.
That looks like a great piece of kit and without having to shell out for batteries you'll get your money back eventually. Nice features too. I wonder how secure the pin number is? Extra points for being a UK company with good ethics too. I'd be inclined to avoid US companies in the current climate.
£27 delivered (edit to say they're under £20 on Ebay) seems too good to be true. It's even got live view so you can check where it's pointing. How do they even make a profit on it?
Both of mine are Bushnells from the lower end of their range. The one is 13 years old now and still soldiering on. The newer one cost me £67 3 years ago and the quality reflects the price. It does the job well enough but the HD video settings are so bad that they're basically pointless. They...
I got really interested in mistletoe this winter. I've been driving from South Wales to Cheltenham once a week and it's like through a mistletoe gradient. It doesn't grow anywhere in my borough but it appears once I drive down off the mountain. By the time I get into Gloucestershire it's...
Apparently it came from an old military term GISS, General Impression of Size and Shape, used for identifying aircraft. With birds it's a bit more complicated as behaviour counts for a lot. Experienced birders can often ID birds from a distance just based on movement and behaviour. Or sometimes...
I've been using the Stanley one for years. They cost under a tenner and are decent enough. I'm on my second one now but the first one had a lot of use and held up well for what it is. It holds enough to do most basic jobs on the car and most of the time I use that rather than getting other tools...
