No one knows where it came from': first wild beaver spotted in Norfolk for 400 years

He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy.

No one knows where it came from': first wild beaver spotted in Norfolk for 400 years

    “…wild, I was absolutely livid”.

Man made fire 350,000 years earlier than previously known…

Interesting. When I heard this story I imagined an ancient human celebrating whilst his mate strolls up with a rollup made from sedge and saying got a light?

    Winter tent window shopping...

I was thinking about the Luxe Hexpeak f6a (rather than the f6e winter model) or an octapeak. I’ve always been taken with them when I’ve seen them. Unfortunately the UK dealer doesn’t stock them now and the US distributor is “problematic”. There are modified versions converted to hot tent...

Also long enough to tuck under your bottom and sit on while keeping your knees covered.

    Poncho practical?

I use a poncho as a summer bit of kit. A just in case rain/wind block/sun shade. They’re also in the family’s vehicles as emergency kit. Much of the year I’ll have a jacket and tarp. I do have the one wind cape, which is a bit Marmite, I find it a bit easier in open areas as a single pole...

    Epiphany

Slow down. I have become content with being still, not worrying about getting somewhere. I do enough and carry what I need to be comfortable. If I am moving I will regularly stop to have a drink and/or snack. I used to be into long distance routes and ticking off way points. I think the...

Dartmoor and Me: How My Kit Held Up

Yeah, there is a hot beverage bag (might be in some mre’s) or you can use something like a wazoo plastic bag that will take boiling water. They’ll make about half a litre but I find handling them a bit awkward. I do admit to having at least half a dozen brews a day so I may be biased!

Plates - what plate/ bowl do you use when camping?

Apart from my mess tin or metal mug I have a large fold-a-cup for solo use.Kuksa or Kupilka cups with m40 for a small group. I do like the look of the Kupilka stuff but it is relatively heavy. If I am catering to half’s dozen I’ll take plates/bowls, they are kids party ones. Very robust and...

Dartmoor and Me: How My Kit Held Up

I carry a couple of MRE heaters. Very light, compact, cheap, store easily. I usually have at least some wet food I can heat up in one. They can be used a a personal heater sat under your poncho etc, they are very hot for a short duration. Not much use to heat liquids, it’s possible but not ideal.

    AliExpress decent cheap outdoor gear?

I am pretty skeptical about emission figures too. We might be a bit more honest is this country but given the amount of greenwashing, figure massaging and outright lies we are fed on a daily basis.... it feels like a choice of which lies you buy into. ;) But that of course was part of the...

    AliExpress decent cheap outdoor gear?

China will meet its' Net zero target early. The UK and many other western nations will fail to do so. We set the agenda and still can't meet the deadline. It's very easy to put the blame on countries like China or India and say the consumerism of the west is the problem driving it. It's not...

    AliExpress decent cheap outdoor gear?

Second item is much newer and I only had about three weeks. Like a lot of AliExpress products these show up under various names and makers. Prices range from £21 to £26. Sizing is quite large, I normally wear L or XL but the jacket I got was Medium and I can get a mid layer under it. I...

    AliExpress decent cheap outdoor gear?

First item is Outdoor Travel hiking gaiters. I’ve had this pair for three years. They are very lightweight polyester and Velcro front fastening. Simple buckle foot strap and a small adjustable buckle at the top. They are very easy to put on and as they are front opening you can get to your...

    AliExpress decent cheap outdoor gear?

AliExpress decent cheap outdoor gear? Maybe. Reviews of “Tactical” hunting jacket and gaiters. Over the years I have picked up some well made and inexpensive bushcraft items from the Chinese powerhouse that is AliExpress. This have generally been hard kit like stoves, pots and tent fittings...
