    The best barrow is....

well... i was in Japan but sadly had to move on as immigration didn't renew my work visa :-( .... how i ended up in costa rica afterwards is a long story but it was back then the only option available....

    The best barrow is....

maybe not exactly prehistoric, but i've seen plenty of those in Gyeongju (korean peninsula), which was once the capital of the Silla kingdom. (i don't speak korean apart from a few words, but once watched a documentary about similarities between the Silla culture and the Scythians, who also used...

    The best barrow is....

thanks for the offer, but shipping and import to Costa Rica would probably cost more than opening a wheelbarrow factory... :-(

    The best barrow is....

sorry for going off-topic, but where's that?! to get back on subject: wheelbarrows are an important farm tool here, too, but the quality is (typical) central american substandard... :-(

some more great movies: ●"they live" with Roddy Piper ("i'm here to kick a** and chew bubblegum -- but i'm all out of bubblegum) maybe sci-fi in the eighties but sadly more realistic these days ●"das boot" (fun fact: the same submarine was used in "raiders of the lost ark") ●"Quigley Down Under"...

to my everlasting shame i forgot Malcolm Douglas' documentary series (which had a significant impact on my life) i haven't owned TV in 20years and haven't watched TV or a DVD for ages, but here's some other great movies: ●Louis de Funes' "gendarm of st. tropez" series ●"chato's land", "red...

    Ingrained Habits

does occasionally turning around to see if someone follows me count?! (=a result of the hostilities of others towards me because of my different interests when growing up) i've also had enough folks commenting on the fact i eat rather fast -- a result of my (not voluntary!) time in uniform...

    Greg Ovens...

... released a video called "10survival tips that could save your life..." on YouTube. one point he addresses is an accident he had recently due to his boot laces of one boot getting caught on the hooks of the other boot. this feature is commonly found on many boots and i've to agree with him...

    Badgers

while i was working on Japan's largest camping ground we had some animals dig their way into our garbage storage area, no matter how much we fortified it... .the culprits proved to be a family of japanese badgers who had dug their domicile inside an old shed about 10m from our worker's...

    Happy Yule!!

extremely glad that days are getting longer again as my place sees no sunshine for about two months (which collides with our rainy season, so i'm constantly fighting damp gear...)

    No heat instant/emergency food?

i tried a simplified version last year for an overnighter and kept one leftover to see if it would survive a few days longer without refrigeration in our obscene tropical humidity (it did, but i wouldn't suggest long-term storage): having no oven and to bake them in a frying pan over open fire...

What do you do when it’s dark? (No not that)

i live off-grid on a farm in the costa rican rainforest, so when it gets dark i stoke up my fire to concoct my ration of rice and beans :eek2: and work on small projects by the light of my head torch.... i've a few books as well so a few minutes of reading afterwards, too

What wildlife did you spot today?

sadly no pics (=my only camera these days is my phone and that stays switched off in my cabin unless i head to the "office" (=Wi-Fi spot) in the afternoon...) i've seen them a few times in different locations (Costa Rica and near lake nicaragua), some folks claim they only exist south of the...

What wildlife did you spot today?

currently it's rainy season here, which means our "moat" (==river separating farm from civilization ) is much higher than normal, but yesterday i was lucky enough to see a neotropical otter make it's way upstream without noticing me

Why have Fallkniven changed the DC4?

didn't know they existed until now... given the fact that i had issues with corrosion on diamond stones in our tropical climate this might work as an alternative to touch up a blade on overnight trips (although i won't be able to get one in the near future)

The back side of a knife.

i actually rounded the spine on my whittling knife (homemade from old file) to stop it from giving me blisters. for scraping i often use a dedicated tool made from a short section of machete blade i found along the road
