    Heart attack or other illness

Yer lucky it’s not Musgrove Park with the view overlooking the huge cemetery :). Took the Park & Ride into Taunton for a last minute pre-Xmas look round today, and the bus loops round between them. Not really the kind of view you need when you’re convalescing!

    Happy Solstice folks

As always, it’s good to get to the shortest day with the promise of longer, brighter, warmer days to come.

Licensing for Knife Sellers or Importers

They will go out of business, which is presumably the intention of this intended legislation. As pointed out earlier, these items are effectively untraceable, and with a huge existing base there’s no way of knowing who supplied what or when. The consultation seems like a knee-jerk attempt to...

    Strange Food ideas.

Fresh strawberries with a good grind of black pepper - but only when in season. Yum. In fact there isn’t much that can’t be improved with fresh ground black pepper, IMO.

    WHAT DID YOU MAKE TODAY?

Odd as it may seem, I opened a book, standing it on end on a piece of card and then traced the shape of the opened pages with a pencil :). I eyeballed the thumb hole on the centre line to ensure enough material around it, and Bob’s-yer-wotsit. The only thing I’m wondering about now is the size...

    WHAT DID YOU MAKE TODAY?

I’ve seen these all over the place online, but almost all made of plastic. I’d thought about making a couple for my family & friends, but one of the ladies at our craft group is an avid reader, and not very well right now, so this prototype is for her. I made it out of a scrap of hickory as that...

Bush Craft. Quiz. Hope you do better than I did

I think that’s usually Joe Gibbs, but Simon is on other channels on YouTube.

Bush Craft. Quiz. Hope you do better than I did

Look up Simon Stanley et al. Shooting a heavy warbow is a very different proposition to a leisure bow. The process is called “shooting in the bow”, and the whole thing is quite different.

    Archery question

I think perhaps you should get it checked at a so-called Pro shop. It might be worth it. Sometimes arrows can lose spine - especially those made with natural materials- but the would cause you to shoot right as a right handed.

    Archery question

Left or right handed shooter? Brace height still correct? String condition: stretched, frayed, good serving, nocking point moved? Cams: string grooves worn, bearings ok? Limbs: twisted, split or delaminating?

What wildlife did you spot today?

We still have Red Admirals feeding in the garden:

    What did you buy today?

Bought some neon orange, neon green, and GITD 550 Paracord from the Bushcraft Store. Delivery tomorrow. Depending upon how much glow the GITD cord produces, I will replace my tent’s front guy lines with it, or perhaps the neon orange.

    What are you listening to?

Currently being force fed Christmas carols on a loop! Doing the dutiful husband duties at the Honiton Christmas Fair, wherein my wife is selling her art…..

Is "preparedness" a state of mind?

Same here. Two miles walk minimum in any direction to a main ‘B’ road, and one bus route with an unreliable timetable. You can flag buses down, and there’s currently a maximum council-set fare, but as the buses are pretty few and far between, we’ve never used them. Ironically the local press...

    What are you listening to?

Genesis, ELO, and Mario Lanza (from my parents!). “Modern music” just gives me the ick..

    New Forest Clothing

Good service etc, but I’ve bought Hoggs of Fife clothing from them, nothing from their own range.

    Chris's trying out leatherwork thread

Very good indeed. I bought the same knife but as a blade only: handled it with buffalo horn and stainless tubes, and then made a quite similar sheath: It’s a tough and sharp blade, and pretty handy in a general purpose camp knife scenario.

    Chris's trying out leatherwork thread

IME, it’s worth giving leather a wipe down with Fiebings Dye Prep to remove any unexpected waxes or oils from veg tan workpieces before dyeing. But it’s not the end of the world as a lot of people look on dye variance as an antique or aged look. I’m not sure I’d bother with dyeing the welt...
