    Crossbow ban consultation

Idiots and those with ill intent always have and always will commit crimes without any recourse to what is or isn’t legal. Banning crossbows and so-called broadhead arrows won’t make any difference to those people. They will still find ways of sourcing those kinds of items for illegal use, and...

Withdrawn Archery. Screw in broad heads.

Try Merlin Archery online. Broadheads will be few and far between in the UK as only people who go overseas to bow hunt would use them.

    Whistling arrow for fun….

Hi Hugh. Well, for feathers it isn’t really the size so much as the oil line in the feather, and how tough and resilient the barbs of the feather are. I tend to follow advice from an old friend of mine, Hilary Greenland, and especially from her book “The Traditional Archer’s Handbook, A...

    Crossbow ban?

Perhaps another aspect is that a crossbow is far easier to operate effectively as a weapon than a longbow is. Very little training or practice is required to be effective. But all of these comments are as old as time, qv crossbows being seen as “evil”, and “an instrument of the devil”. In the...

    Crossbow ban?

Yep. Trade points are as old as metalworking.

    Whistling arrow for fun….

If I’m not using paid-for fletchings, I’ll just hang around lakes which hold stocks of geese or swans and keep an eye out….Alternatively, while I was still in Surrey, I made friends with some smallholders who raised turkeys…..a goldmine of great feathers for “a drink” :). See :

    Whistling arrow for fun….

If the whistler’s cost will be prohibitive for fun roving, then I’d suggest making a few flu-flus with 3x pieces of full feather fletchings on each shaft. They work well for stumping etc if you put an ordinary field point in the arrow.

    Whistling arrow for fun….

Yep. It’s actually a brass two-part pile where the front part unscrews from the socket so that you can clean out any soil/dirt that will get in there on a ground landing. They aren’t that cheap, but built very solid so should last for ever(ish). I got mine here: Bearpaw whistling pile Also...

Government consultation on banning large knives and machetes

Absolutely pointless gesture politics- “got to be seen to be doing something “. Those proposals would do nothing at all to reduce the violent crime rate. How about actually enacting the current legislation and use stop and search etc? Violent and illegal acts will still continue to be committed...

    Whistling arrow for fun….

Last week, our club (Windwhistle Company of Archers) had a roving marks shoot, and one or two of the members used whistling arrows for a bit of fun. I’ve never made a whistling arrow (well, not on purpose…) before, so I thought I’d give it a go. Here is the result - a test shot into our safety...

    What are your weekend plans?

Saturday: a short day of winter angling, now that it’s finally stopped raining for a few days. It’ll be cold, but bright, and my flask and sarnies will help keep me comfy. Merino undies all round. Sunday: out rabbiting with the old boys and their ferrets in the local area. We will be on the...

    Fletching jig

Epoxy is good and tough, but be sure that air isn’t trapped between the pile and the shaft. Easiest way is to provide a groove in the shaft piece that fits into the pile so that air and excess glue can escape during assembly. Fletchings on the same arrow need to be of the same ‘wing’, so their...

    Fletching jig

If you can afford pre-prepared fletchings and shafts, use a jig and three fletchings per arrow. If you are happy to use plastic, use a plastic nock, having cut a taper with a suitable pencil sharpener - you may need to experiment to find a matching taper. Glue the nock on so that the string slot...

    Woodstoves

So it sounds like Charnwood is the way to go (?). We have an open fire with a Minster fireplace (and we do use it), but the missus wants to change it out for a proper firebox of some kind. I presume that we will need some kind of flue installation to go with the log burner, into the existing...
