    Axminster Power Tools - Administration

That's a real blow. It was my go-to place for a lot of woodworking and DIY bits and bobs.

My On The Bench Today Thread

That first picture made me wince! The recovery to perfectly flat was very impressive. Does SF100 hold a good edge?

    Fad items of Bushcraft

This is what I'm on about. The rest of the knife is great.

    Fad items of Bushcraft

In a similar vein to the hardened pimples for smashing car windows, the other thing I reckon is a fad are penknives with a special blade for cutting seat belts. They seem to have a curved, serrated cutting edge and the one of which I have experience only opens at a slight odd angle, not in line...

    Fad items of Bushcraft

Without wishing to hijack a very interesting, entertaining and occasionally embarrassing thread, has anyone compared the Laplander with the Silky Outback? The latter seems more hardy, less horticultural...

Withdrawn Thorn Wood Forge Goshawk axe

As per the title, number 012 is for sale. As with my previous posts, there are a few conditions: 1. I am not interested in an exchange 2. Price includes postage to U.K. mainland addresses 3. If you are interested, p.m. me. Offers are on a strictly first-come-first served basis from the p.m...

    Fad items of Bushcraft

I couldn't agree more. However, if I am carrying a tool and expect it to perform a given range of tasks, I do want it to do so optimally. I have found the SFA that I had didn't do that, hence my decision to tote two, if I carry an axe at all.

    Fad items of Bushcraft

I am sure that this will prove contentious but I'll put it out there anyway. I reckon the Gransfors Small Forest axe is a fad. When starting out, I fell under the thrall of that man Mears, who championed the SFA. In use, I have found these tools to be a dreadful compromise, which does nothing...

    Fad items of Bushcraft

I think the Swedish army's LK35 and LK70 rucksacks make the list. Like the army Trangias, they were once pretty readily available but now are hard to find. I tried a LK70 and found it to be unnecessarily heavy and fantastically uncomfortable. I think it was riding the wave of availability and...

    WHAT DID YOU MAKE TODAY?

I made a spoon for my twelve-month old grandson: Unoiled... and oiled... I also started flattening out a warped plank with my scrub plane. It will become a bench, once I've shaped the ash legs and stretchers and made the mortices and tenons... The wood on both is seasoned maple...

    Deodorising boots

I suppose the soaking the interiors of the boots with something like Milton 2 would work... I'll try the baking soda first, though.

    Deodorising boots

Sadly, I don't think the microwave trick will work because of the metal hooks and eyelets!

    Berghaus cyclops Crusader

Ah! The Cyclops back system: one of the very best in the business! Simple, very strong and incredibly comfortable. That's a great-looking bargain you've found. Well done.

    Deodorising boots

Many thanks, all. I can't remember the name of the spray; I think it was some sort of Dr Scholl preparation. In any case, it was useless. Just for the record, I always wear pure wool socks - not even 'wool mix'! They are changed regularly and, thus far, neither I nor anyone who has come close...

    Deodorising boots

Does anyone know of a genuinely effective way of deodorising boots? I have a pair of much-loved and much-used Altberg boots which now stink whenever I wear them. I have tried changing the insoles, washing the insoles and spraying the boots' interiors but to no avail. I do not want to get rid of...

    Buffalo clothing - Ben Fogle

There's no doubting the out-and-out practicality of Buffalo clothing but it might take a bit of a redesign to appeal to a newer generation. I love my belay jacket: it's one of the most useful and used garments I own but stylish it certainly isn't! I reckon the idea of canny product placement...

    Is it worth it?

Surely you should take 'ex-' as the prefix, meaning 'formerly', and '-pert' as the root, meaning 'forward, saucy, unconcealed'. That suggests someone who was once to the fore but who has now been beaten back into obscurity?

Walnut surplus! What do I do with it?

That's great. Many thanks for posting such clear instructions. I'll let you know how I get on!

    Is it worth it?

If it's any comfort, I have connection with neither Thorn Wood Forge, the business, nor any of the individuals running it. I am the owner of two of their axes and I have never used better ones. The tools exude quality and inspire complete confidence in use.

    Is it worth it?

I would recommend Thorn Wood Forge. They have a good range of models to suit all needs and are hand-made in Somerset. They are expensive, though; still, in this instance, I'd say you get what you pay for. Oscar Rush over in Norfolk is someone else to look at. His stuff is less bushcrafty - more...
