We see this all the time with "Survival TV." I remember catching a show on a hotel television while I was traveling for business.
One of the characters (I wont call them experts) was attempting to light a pile of wood shavings using a firesteel. He knelt in front of his tinder pile and...
I just purchased the Nikon Monarch 5 ED 8x42 binoculars. I tried a number of brands and liked the Monarch best. I chose 8x because they give me a wider field of view. This will help me to find birds in wooded areas and pick up wildlife concealed in underbrush.
There were binoculars with...
Dan1982, thanks for sharing that. It's a nice interview and well written. Ray articulates bushcraft and relates it to sustainability. Nice!

Robson Valley, I think writing it out makes it seem more onerous than it is. My plan is to have fun with the sit pad and see how it fares. It's not "critical equipment" so I'm willing to experiment and if it doesn't work out that's OK. It was fun to make. :)

Robson Valley, this is an insightful question!
It seems inevitable to me that the sheepskin will become wet (and dirty). And here the sit pad suffers compared to closed-cell foam.
My strategy is as follows:
Transport
The sit pad fits vertically in my daypack. It consumes a small...
Big G_73, I did use an automotive spray adhesive that was designed for headliners and interior fabric.
Here's a description I wrote of how I made the sit pad and my trial run with it in Sunol Regional Wilderness. There's a decent sized "lessons learned" section. :)...
Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions on how to make my sheepskin sit pad!
My butt has never felt so warm and dry! Too much information? :)
Thanks again,

Thanks, wicca! STOP to the rescue. It's so much easier to say than to do in the heat of the moment.
Robson Valley, those are two great stories!

I was "disoriented" for about an hour and a half this year in the Sierras, near Donner Pass. What made it spooky is that I attended the 24th Anniversary Donner Party Hike the previous day. Talk about bad imagery! :)
My girlfriend and I set out for a lake I visited 9 years prior. I grew...
Robson Valley, I'm sorry to hear that. I'd love to see them.
It sounds like posting pictures is a real pain in the adze. :D

Hi Guys,
After Robson Valley mentioned the Baby Adze in another post, I purchased one to give it a try. I like it a lot and it is a fine tool. But it is more of a gutter adze than a bowl adze. You may want to look for an adze with a more acute angle between the iron and the handle for...
Pioneer72, thanks for the suggestion.
Robson Valley, neoprene never occurred to me. It's a good idea. For now, I'm going to stay with the coated Cordura I have on hand because I like the dark green color.
