    Selecting an axe (picture heavy)

Yes, except this was a hatchet head I had laying around in the shed. I have done this before just shaping with a hacksaw (hard work!), but for this one I used an angle grinder. Then & pushed the cutting edge into the earth/ground & made a fire over it. This way you can heat the eye of the head...

    Selecting an axe (picture heavy)

FROM MY ORIGINAL POST IN 2009. "I don't like carrying a lot of weight, so when in the woods I generally only carry my 18th century English trade tomahawk. If I have extra work to do such as constructing a large shelter, then I might pack along my light half-axe. Both of these require no wedge to...

    Just one crop

I think not planting your garden is a big mistake Tony, but your choice. As climate change accelerates there will be more food shortages & prices will rise. If you are only going to plant one crop, then what is the most expensive food that you purchase? Keith. Climate change means Australia may...

    Power at the farm

I am not a solar technician, but I did set up solar power on the old cottage. But this was just a high amp hour 12 volt battery & a couple of solar panels, I did the same on our caravan. This system was fine for running 12 volt lighting, but no good for anything else. To do what you want you...

    Persuade me to go light?!

My pack contents were put together based on a compromise between two principles; minimum weight & maximum self-reliance. My equipment weighs 9 Kg. I could lighten my load further, as I have the primitive skills to allow me to do this, & I may do so in the near future. There is not anything in my...

    Mold on tarp

Sunlight will kill mould on canvas Max, just leave it out in the sun. Always try & let your shelter dry out before repacking. Keith.

    Copper kettle

You don't say if it is a cooking kettle or a tea kettle. If it is a cooking kettle it is okay to use providing you do not cook any acidic foods that will leach the copper. A tea kettle is fine for just boiling water bigbear. I use a brass cooking kettle for food & water, but it is tin lined. Keith.

    Foraged plant fertiliser

We have used comfrey & nettles to make liquid fertilizer prc, also good in the compost, & comfrey can be used in composting toilets & ash can toilets. Keith.

    Tent or bivvy?

I know what you mean cipherdias, I don't like sleeping bags either. I have always just used an oilcloth shelter, I like to have it open so I can see all around. Also I light my fire close to the shelter so that I can get some warmth & cook or boil water without having to leave my shelter. I...

    Have you seen this monster!

My youngest son has one Allison but he has not set it up yet. Good for people who want or need to grow their own food but don't have the time. Regards, Keith.

    Light slackline/strap for tree-tent?

These truck tie downs cost anything from $3 to $50 & upward. They come in a couple of sizes, narrow ones for light trucks, & wider commercial models. They work very well, I have a bag full of them. Keith.

    Light slackline/strap for tree-tent?

How about a truck tie-down strap Jakob? I don't think they are expensive. Regards, Keith.

    Outdoor Toileting Best Practice

Surely it is no great hardship to dig a toilet hole, a fairly deep one, not a scratching of the surface. Just bury it, toilet paper as well. Since when has this not been common practice?! Keith.

    Bell tents, polycotton, Robens Klondike

Meja, may I suggest that you get a roof rack for the car. This will give you more room for the tent, & tied to the roof rack it will help dry it out on the way home, providing of course it is not raining. When you get home you can spread the tent out over your roof rack to dry further, make sure...

    Landowners Official Permission

The only help I need is for campers not to litter, leave the area just as they found it, be safe with camp fires, & report to me if they see any trespassing, find any broken fencing, see any feral animals. Though right now I do have a composting toilet bucket that needs changing, any helpers? :)...

    Landowners Official Permission

I am a land owner Alistair, & I would prefer it if you fronted up at my house & asked me personally face to face. Check out the farms in your area, they will likely also know the owners to adjacent land/forests. Regards, Keith.

Canvas sewing - Back pack project questions

Good day Eli. My knapsack started off as a haversack many years ago, my wife made it for me. I found it did not do what I wanted, so I converted it into a knapsack. I did the same for two of my sons, using second hand cotton haversacks made in China. I do not carry a lot of gear, I don't need...
